14 Ashcraft paint job
1 Attachment(s)
Seeing that this weekend was going to be nice sunny cool weather and the little boat has had zero attention in a long while I prepped to paint the hull and interior.
Woke up this morning to a 65 degree sunny day perfect to do some sanding on the hull. I already flipped the boat over with the help of my 2 man childs. I filled in some imperfections yesterday and sanded it down today. I'm going to tip and roll interlux paint later today. not going for the perfect finish as it's a flats boat that will get beat up in the backcountry. Will get some pictures later today of before and after the hull is painted |

With a little practice I could be good at this
It came out better than I thought it would, except for a occasional bug ....not bad Still have to do the stern but here are some before and after pictures |

Wow!!!! Nicely done! Love to see some close up pics because I have a 13 whaler project I plan on rolling

Jorge that looks great.

Since you are in Stuart, you really should check into Signature finish, used to be owned by Tom Fabula, he has since passed, but they are still selling the same paint. I found it real easy to use, roll and tip. |

Sorry Jorge, that was targeted at "thepistonhead".
I do know you are in Miami. I grew up in Miami Lakes, when Hialeah wasn't a bad word. |

So today I did the primer for the deck and gunnels but forgot to take pictures.
Am going to go with some type of outdoor rug for the inside of the hull to coverup the prior rug and glue that was there. I would spend a long time to sand and get it nice. Either way it’s a flats boat that I want to fish and let my 15 year old nephew learn on before he uses the Seacraft. |
Signature Finish was a good product. Gotta put it on thin!!!! Unfortunately, I spoke with Sandy recently and she has shut the business and not taking any more orders. I had to look to Alexseal to finish my Lil Mako project. The rep said it would be compatible. Hope so.

So today I painted the insides the parts not painted will have some black outdoor carpet the one with short nap. I went and painted just one side to how it would look but I think the black rug will add some color and break up the all white look. I hope to have the rug in this weekend and add some gelcoat in the 2 wells in the back. Then comes the rigging.
I was able to locate a nice used lower unit for the Yamaha 30 and it's painted and ready for a new impeller and oil and then attach it to the mid section. |
Trust me when I tell you black anything in a boat in Florida do not go together.
Take a small sample lay it in the boat in the sun then try to sit or stand on it after 1 hour !!! Safe bet you change your mind. Otherwise looking good. |

So this weekend I got the stainless steel rub rail on, relocated the console ,the front hatch, screw down the bilge pump, and the teleflex steering helm also. Have aluminum gas tank sort of in place and that will be done next time.
Since I relocated the console the steering cable is now too long. I want to sit on the back deck instead of buying and installing some kind of seat. So I imagine that the cables to the side binnacle will also be long. Easy fix ...just break out some more money. |

I installed the gas tank and had the carpet on the sides glued in. Before it had a feeling of being inside a bath tub. I need to do some trimming on the edges of the carpet but it looks a lot better.
Now the gas tank which is tucked under the front is pretty ugly as is. I could just live with it, glue some more rug on it, or make a panel . Or some other idea may come my way. Tommorow I'm going to get the engine back on and hook up the rigging and maybe start it up. |

So today I sold the Ashcraft. Was tired if it not looking like I would want it to be and I'm not up for a project.
Good news is that I ordered this today. Brand new 14.6 Skimmer Skiff. Plan is to put the 30 Yamaha on it and use the trailer that I have. Not ordering in that yellow and I'm leaning on either Ice Blue or match it to the Seacraft in Aqua Mist |
Woohoo, nice boat buddy! That'll make fishing the keys so much better, hope you get it soon!

It's a 3 months wait for the boat ....seems like everything you want is a 2 to 6 month wait. What times we are in. Yes fishing in the keys and flamingo are is going to be good. One day I hope to fish up your way Jorge |
Yep, that's what I've been hearing from everywhere. News say boat sales are WAY up due to Covid, the Boston Whaler factory close to here was recently hiring up to 300 more people to try to meet the demand!
By all means do come up, there are so many different places to fish up here; Indian River, Mosquito Lagoon, Banana River, Lake Washington, St. John's river, etc. A boat like that Skimmer can go anywhere and if you go want to go on open water we can use my Aquasport as a base boat for safety. |
