Pictures of my stainless marine bracket for weight comparisons of older 200 evinrude and the newer 300 Etec some additional weight added due to t top and more fuel in pictures of the 300 hope the comparison can help others with questions on the extra weight

Beauty! Thanks for posting up some pictures that answers some questions seems to fit the hull well!

mazz888 04-15-2021 11:27 AM

Looks great. What kind of numbers are you getting out of the 300 Etec? I have the same set up (new motor last year 2015 etec 300) with a hermco bracket and am not happy with it at all. The shop I used raised the bracket because the previous engine needed a jackplate to get the Av plate out of the water and I am not sure if this messed things up on me. I can barely get 2 mpg and am stuck in the low to mid 30s top end.

What prop do you have on it?

DonV 04-15-2021 07:01 PM

Just my opinion.....those are terrible numbers. Those Gen1 eTecs are much, much better than that!!!

Blackfin26 04-16-2021 07:07 AM

Agree. What prop and where's the mounting height? You should be pushing 45-50 mph top end.

mazz888 04-16-2021 08:02 AM

I agree as well I was very disappointed with it. I didn't really get any help from my shop last year when I asked so I think this is going to be something I have to figure out. I ran the prop slip calculator and I am very high like 30%+. I tried to remove a transom mount transducer and clean up the water pick up t o see if the prop was getting bad water but it didn't help.

Right now it has the dealer installed viper 14 3/4 X 19.

I will measure where the av plate is in relation to the keel this weekend and post some shots of the back end.

Any help would be great given the circumstances last year the time I had to use it I went fishing, this year I need to dial it in. I liked it better with the old Fitch 225.

wattaway2 04-16-2021 10:35 AM

Your numbers are very low I’m running a power tech four blade 17 pitch and I’m very happy with it. I also had the viper 19 inch three blade from the dealer adequate but not what I was looking for and did not provide the lift I needed and that’s why I changed to the four blade. I’m doing 48-49range at about 5900 with the four blade prop the Viper was just at 50 miles an hour but again hard to check when you’re running in an open sea. Unless it’s flat Calm. Haven’t checked the fuel #s but have been satisfied with what I burn in a day of fishing..Hoping to feel well enough to bring the boat home and run it I can measure the motor height at that time I’ve been fighting Covid and then the Covid pneumonia came later so I’m still a little weak. Get the vaccine dealing with Covid certainly isn’t fun

mazz888 04-16-2021 10:48 PM

Thanks for getting back to me and I hope you feel better soon.

Yes something is definitely wrong with my set up and it’s super frustrating I had thought about bringing to an other shop to dial in. If anyone knows of a spot on Cape Cod let me know. At this point with a small child at home the time I get to a pend on the water I would rather be fishing and it would be worth it to me to get this fixed.

What kind of RPM's are you running at WOT?

I am around 5600-5700 with motor trimmed out (not sure of the trim %)

The AV plate is around 5.5-6in from the keel, it was a little hard to measure alone. Here is a shot of the set up. I already removed the transducer to see if that was causing bad water into the prop. I don't know if the tabs are the issue they had to be moved in closer to the engine to fit when the bracket was first installed. I am thinking about moving them back to where the should be.

wattaway2 sorry for high jacking your thread.

kmoose 04-23-2021 07:51 AM

Tabs are the main issue that I see. Bottom paint can take a few mph out of it too. My bracket is high but yours seem especially high so that is likely causing you to run the tabs down and motor tucked in which creates the turbulence interfering with the prop as well as extra drag.

It not going to be an easy fix but its totally fixable. Pull the motor, bracket and tabs. I don't know if those are scuppers on the outside but that is where the tabs need to be so new tab plate brackets will need to be modified (cut) to go around the scuppers. Fill and patch all holes, patch paint, drill and remount. It's a big job but nothing that couldn't be done in a week with about $1,700 in supplies including new tabs and bolts. The difference in performance would be priceless.

mazz888 04-23-2021 10:18 AM

I agree the money is worth it. I had planned to move the tabs so I guess I will start there and see how it goes. Any reason that I wouldn't reuse the tabs that are there now?

You could but I would go with the biggest plates possible. Your bracket height is still very high and will continue to fight you but not as much as the tabs are now. Just for reference, my bracket is on the high side of acceptable. Also, consider a 4 blade prop.

wattaway2 04-25-2021 11:03 PM

I have to agree wasn’t able to get over this weekend hopefully Monday now and try to check the motor height. I would say starting with the tabs is the cheapest place to start. I have a issue with my ladder location on my bracket that limited me to a 12 x 9” tab but wish I had caught the issue before hand and was planning on the 12 x 12” tabs . Feel like the extra length would be a noticeable help and relocating outward will also help.

mazz888 04-26-2021 10:50 AM

Thanks guy I will start there and see what it does. I don't mind spending money to get this fixed time is my biggest issue.

Just seeing this....sorry to hear about this mazz....there was an old thread on this when I was mounting bracket:

http://www.classicseacraft.com/commu...p?t-19075.html

Im still running my old 250 DI and a 15x15 stainless OMC. I hated the viper!

I am about 3 3/4 to cav plate from flat keel.
Setback is 28"
Bracket keel is 4" above boat keel.

Hey Hermit! Yes this didn’t go as planned lol. I will get it sorted out I hope. I guess the logic to raise the bracket was justified in theory at the time of repower but I guess it might have opened up a new can of worms. Thanks for the measurements and the link I’m going to move the tabs this week. I hope you have a good season and if you want to try for a giant this year the invite is always open just let me know.

wattaway2 04-28-2021 03:21 PM

Just got to check my cav. plate 30” bracket and I’m at 5 1/2” above the keel . I’m wondering if the flat bottom vs a v bottom bracket is / would make a difference?
I’m not sure I could raise it that high with a 3 blade prop but the 4 blade likes it.

Thank you for the info I got the tabs moved old holes filled and glassed over. I hopefully can get some gel coat on it soon to finish the process and get it on the water to see what it is like now. I will try to get my hands on a 4 blade to try out. Again thank you everyone for the help I will update faster sea trial.

Thought I’d add these pictures hopefully they might be of some help.

Great job! That will be a huge improvement.

Thanks! I’m now running a Power tech 4 blade — OFS4R17PCL200.
(15.25 diameter 17” pitch 4 blade stainless steel ) very happy with it. It and the fin added quite a bit of lift in the stern.

I'm running the 16 pitch in that same PT prop and have been very happy with it.
