1969 20' rebuild
2 Attachment(s)
Thanks to everyone who posts their builds for inspiration to start mine. I bought this hull from a family friend 9 years ago and have been reading through threads here and staring at it since. After moving it to three different houses i finally feel like i can get started. I have a 72 19' mako ive owned for the past 12 years and that's due for a rebuild as well, so i figured id tackle this one first and still have something to get out on the water.
Pulled the motor off this weekend and got her set on a cradle i can roll around. Ill be starting some demo this week and into the weekend. i dont plan on re using the gunnel rails or the console so if anyone is interested let me know. Im located in South Jersey |
Original "Robins Egg Blue" gel coat!
Welcome to CSC and Good Luck with your rebuild |
Thanks capt. Anyone in SJ have recommendations on where to get coring materials, glass, and resin?
|
Welcome to the gang! Looks like you have all the equipment needs under control!
|
Thanks, the ability to make some heavy lifts is helpful for sure. Made a little headway tonight removing the console and fuel tank with about 30 gallons of 16yr old gas in it.
|
Captain Crabcake, I bought glass supplies from Barnegat Light Fiberglass Supplies in West Creek. It’s been a few years since my project, but they were helpful.
|
Looking forward to following another project. If you have the splash-well cover and want to part with it I may be interested, thanks.

Got the boat in the shop today. Took some initial measurements and started pulling off hardware I want to re use. See pic for measurements. Are there any other important dimensions I should take note of before I start cutting? Can anyone tell me if some of this hardware is original from the factory? They say Lee’s Miami on them.
|
Most of the original hardware was by Mardium for the haws pipes and cleats anyway I’m sure the outrigger holders at least would have been an option. With Lee’s being from Miami they would likely have sourced rod holders from them as they were quality pc’s then and today
|
Following your project but if you're going with new stuff I am interested in the rod holders if you part with them.

oldscool: your welcome to them ill be going new. As much as i like cool, older stuff i dont plan on going through all this to put old back on.
After being down with the kung flu for a week ive been able to get some demo done. Have her stripped down to the stringers and removed the inner skin of the transom. For the most part i left a 1 1/2" tab of the outside edge of the inner skin to attach to the new transom. Transom was like mulch, as expected. Will hopefully get new transom in within the next few weeks as long as weather temps cooperate and i can source materials. Planning on going with 1 1/2" coosa board for transom. Not sure what system i want to use, but planning the whole build for epoxy. The stringers are pretty rough. Cracked all over the place. I am planning on raising them and wrapping with additional glass anyway so not the end of the world. What do you guys think of height of transom cutout? ive read a few different things and it sounds like 26" is the way to go? What do you think about how much to raise stringers? I want it to be self bailing, so i was leaning towards a minimum of 2". Never tackled a project of this scope so any input/critisim is appreciated. Have only ever done small glassing projects and a boat load of studying on here. |
IM inbound on the rod holders. FWIW, I'm going 27" and 2-1/2".
|
I suggest laying a temp height sole and adjust to your preferred gunwale height. I personally like it just over my knees for stability in rougher seas. Some have gone true Conch style and have a much lower cap height.

Called barnegate supply today, they donÂ’t expect to have any coosa board untill April. No Penske board either. I struck out everywhere else around me as they are all wholesale. Id really like to get to glassing in the transom in the next few weeks so if anyone has any leads on some material In the south jersey area I would appreciate it. I found a place online that is 950 a sheet of 3/4 , and thatÂ’s not even with shipping. I know supply chains are having their issues, as IÂ’m dealing with it at work on pvc and ads pipet, so price is not something IÂ’m being too picky about, just want to get things moving. |
Crab cake,
Might be a long shot but give south Jersey lumbermans a call. May have the 3/4. There off of 50 west of Egg Harbor City. Beastley |

This. 2" would be the max I would go...27 like olds school said is about right. Look at dirtwheel s stuff that he did... strick |
Crab,
Might want to stop by a few local shops that do restoration. They usually buy in bulk where it is beneficial to have it freight shipped to them. I know a few shops by me that I have visited, offered to sell me core and alike for their cost. A little flattery goes a long way and maybe a relationship for minor work needed! |

Almost have the old wood transom removed. Most of it came off with ease, except for the last 1/8 in. A 2.5 in chisel and hammer took a majority of the rest, and a disk sander is taking care of what’s bonded to the skin.
Beastley, South jersey lumbermans came through on a sheet of 1 1/2” coosa board. Thanks for the referral. Will be hopefully getting transom done within next few weeks, then onto grinding the inside of the hull and the stringer work. |
Hi Capt, I purchased 1/2 " Penske at Barnegat last year and 3/4" Coosa at Lockwood in Sayreville three years ago. I have your twin 1972 same blue. Good luck with your build

Hey good luck with your project! I’m not too far away from you on Eastern Shore of Maryland and I travel through south Jersey often for work.
Composites One in Millville, NJ may have coosa but would need to set up an account. They also have resins and some glass. Have been ordering some of my glass from Fiberglasssupply in Baltimore so might be worth a price comparison. Last, Harbor Sales in Sudlersville, MD has stocked coosa in the past but not up to date on their stock. They have trucks that run all over the area so might be able to get it delivered - not sure of costs. On the deck height , I did a 20 sf a few years back ( box stringer ‘74) and used the transom scraps to raise deck just over 1.5”. I have a 140 on a 26” bracket and dont have any significant issues with water on deck except for rough water / standing in stern corner. Didn’t want to go too high and feel like the gunwhales were too low on the leg. |
