1977 23 Restoration

4 Attachment(s)
Howdy folks. Just bought a 1977 SC 23' Scepter and will be doing a full restoration on the boat.

Just finishing up my Cabo build so it might be a few weeks before I get started but thought I would introduce myself and start reading about all the good things y'all have done to these boats.

Welcome to classic seacraft....I’ve never been on a Cabo but I have a feeling you will be noticing a significant difference in ride quality with the scepter. I looks like the gel coat is in good shape. What do you have planned for the boat?

Oh man... another rebuild? You are a glutton for punishment!
I followed your Cabo build on the other site, great job, looking forward to seeing what you do with the SeaCraft.

Full gut job restoration just like I've done with the Cabo. Won't be a single screw left that hasn't been replaced.

I did some modifications to the Cabo and haven't really figured out what is warranted on the SC yet besides raising the deck and creating a ginormous bilge with easy access to everything. I'm not here to promote my Cabo build but if you're curious it's on The Hull Truth under the same username.

Really want to spend some time researching past restorations to see what I like, what makes sense, and what overall improvements can be made while keeping the original character and performance of the boat intact.

It'll definitely be enclosing the transom and adding a bracket as well as a hard top but that's as far as I've gotten in the planning stages thus far.

Here's a couple examples of before and after on the Cabo. I'm pretty meticulous when it comes to this stuff.

Edit... not sure why my pics are turning on me when uploaded.

I seen your Cabo rebuild on the THT. I frequent there but do not post much anymore. You will find that most people do not raise the deck on the 23 it’s not necessary especially if you’re putting a flotation bracket you can just reroute the scuppers out the back and be just fine....but do as you wish. Note the word “flotation”

I've read that the stern can be wet but will look into it more as the build progresses. Haven't decided yet if I want to build a bracket for this one or go aluminum/stainless. Also depends on whether I decide to go with twins or a single. Seems that a lot of people are happy with a single 300 but it would be nice to have twins offshore.

Does anyone have a picture of the folding stairs for bow access? Trying to see if the PO has them and she doesn't know what she's looking for. TY

There are a few pics on the literature pages:
Look at Tsunami - http://www.classicseacraft.com/broch...ure/index.html
Look at p4 - http://www.classicseacraft.com/broch...ure/index.html

Remember to say that they fold up 'kinda' flat - it's just white plastic pieces like 2x4s with hinges

Thanks. Yeah those don't look too sophisticated.

If she can’t find them give me a call I can draw something up for you. You should be able to fab these pretty easy.

Here are the ones that the PO had made (I think) for my Tsunami. Pretty slick.

77SceptreOB 07-27-2022 03:03 PM

Nice! I wonder where you can find that attachment hardware?

Xcomunic8d 07-28-2022 02:26 PM

It was probably custom milled out of aluminum stock. It’s very easy to shape on a bench grinder, die grinder or end mill.

I’d like to see some more pics of the joinery and details. I was kind of toying with how to make this already. I see the value in having one on my boat.

You able to post more pics basketcase? Looks like 2 layers 3/4” plywood.
I really like how it collapses down. I was thinking about making it to fold flat somehow but this would be easier.

Pm me basketcase and I can send my number. I assume we don’t have access to former builder. That is well within my capabilities to build.

Here is the link to a post from my boats previous owner. He mentions that the builder was from this page.

Wow, that's an old thread! Seems like a good design if still functioning now - 10 years later.

Xcomunic8d 07-30-2022 02:47 AM

Yeah good read there. The question of the female anchor of the hinge is the question now. But great pics of joinery. I’ll toy with hardware and design over next couple days.

After a little hunting I found this.

http://www.epbws.com/boarding-ladder/

Those are ronstan 32 clips in the rails clips alone are 72 ea but would be moveable on a rail. I’m not suggesting those but maybe a fixed d ring something like this
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HCN2Q2Q...GFYFKRTK53NPH8
Marine Grade Stainless Steel 316 Heavy Duty Diamond Pad Eye

I just hate that you will need 2 sets installed (port and stbd) and 1 for hatch. It’s so grainy I can’t make out how the originals mounted in the catalog.

https://www.deepblueyachtsupply.com/...adder-hardware

https://rwrope.com/collections/marin...14089663971381

Still hunting but boarding ladder hardware seems pricey.

Now that I've seen it I can make it. The only thing I would add is some kind of latch or stop that would prevent the ladder from folding while climbing it.

Not needed. Once it's locked into place, it cannot fold.
