Is the Silver Hawk an old Sea Craft mold?

Re: Look familiar?

There is a thread running on thehulltruth.com about the same thing. And the Guy building Chaos boats in NJ got really PO'ed that people said the same thing. He's said no the two are not the same but the hull is based on the 23 Potter built boat, and that they fixed some of the problems Potter had with his boats. Years ago I was contacted by one of the builders of Silver Hawk about building T-tops for the boats. He told me that the hull was the 23 Sea Craft and the had just fudged the stern a few inches and rounded the corners. I decided not to get involved due to the shady nature of the owners and past bad deals they had pulled on others.

Ive got to kick in my two cents on this one... I posted on thehulltruth about this whole issue. Next time you are at the boat show, look at the 23' sea and the silverhawk: the damn things are almost identical; hardly any changes were made, and none to the running surfaces. I was told by the guy from jersey marine while at the boston show that Me: "hey this looks like a seacraft" Jersey Marine Rep: "yeah thats because it is, with a few little modifications, we just put a few of our own layout ideas etc into the deck and added more camber to the transom." Go check it out: http://thehulltruth.com/6/ubb.x?q=Y&...1126059161&p=1 It was one hell of a funny argument.

Not to further speculate about the differences in the SeaCraft and Silverhawk hulls, but I have to chime in. My buddy is a Silverhawk owner, and according to the dealership he purchased his at, the hull is based on the SC 23, but so as not to infringe upon patent and copyright laws, Jersey Marine Industries had to make sure their mold did not touch a SC hull in at least 3 areas (I don't know which 3). This allows JMI to essentially copy the SC hull without any legal ramifications.

Don, this same friend just had to replace the T-top because 3 of the welds broke. On the good side the manufacturer covered it under warranty, on the bad side he had to trailer the boat to NJ to get it fixed. He's picking it up this week.

Re: Look familiar?

The variable deadrise hull patent has long since expired. But with the recent relative "success" of Hinkley's "trade dress" suits against several "copy cat" builders (Hinckley reaches settlement with "Copy-Cat" boatbuilders), I would think Tracker (clueless) would be all over these guys. If there was ever a trade dress issue or unique feature, it's the SC hull.

I sound like a lawyer. Ouch!
