SS Fuel/Water Separator .... which one?
 

I wish to replace the corroded aluminum fuel/water separator to a Stainless one.

They list 2 in SurplusUnlimited.com.
- #2540 which appears to be the same i have now.
- #3516 is a Racor version with bowl.

Is the Racor type the way to go?

No experience here, but would need to change my mounting location to allow for the longer Racor filter/bowl.

Nick-I have talked to few folks about that Racor filter. They like it and can drain the water out of the bowl without trying to remove the filter and stir up all the junk inside or just replacing it every time. Anyone have one?

HI NICK,I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF A COMPLETE REDO ON MY 23'. I'LL PROBABLY GO WITH THE RACOR,BOWL ON THE BOTTOM. NOT BECAUSE I'VE HAD ONE ON THE BOAT BEFORE,IT'S NEW TO ME TOO. BUT BECAUSE MY MOTORHOME IS A DIESEL PUSHER(BUS). IT'S GOT A FILTER WITH A BOWL AND DRAIN ON THE BOTTOM. TALK ABOUT A QUICK AND EASY WAY TO INSPECT YOUR FUEL SOURCE! NOT TO MENTION THE COST OF THE FILTER. DIESEL FUEL HAS A LOT MORE CRUD IN IT THAN REGULAR FUEL,SO YOU GET IN THE HABIT OF SEEING A LITTLE WATER IN THE BOWL. JUST DRAIN IT OFF AND GO. BUT IN THE BOAT ON THE WAY BACK FROM THE BAHAMA'S,AFTER TAKING ON SOME OF THIER FUEL [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img] , IT'LL BE GOOD TO KNOW I CAN OPEN A VALVE ON THAT BOWL TO DRAIN OFF SOME CRUD WITHOUT WISHIN' I HAD A SUPPLY OF THOSE PLAIN FILTER'S. THE OLD SAYING "WHAT YOU CAN'T SEE,CAN'T HURT YOU" DOES NOT APPLY HERE [img]images/icons/wink.gif[/img] .

I've got the Racor and it works perfectly - you can get water out without stirring up all the crud in the filter like Snookerd mentions. Just make you sure mount it with enough clearance at the bottom to open the drain - a buddy of mine forgot this and had to do his over [img]images/icons/rolleyes.gif[/img] .

I have been using them for years. I don't see why anyone one would use any other system. As stated above you can clean out crud and water while running. I know it has helped me on several occasions. I think it is a must on any outboard.

Go with the racor. Its a far better filter then the others. If your mounting it out of the bilge area of a inboard or io be sure to go with the plastic bowl vrs the metal bowel. The plastic bowl allows you to see what is in the bottom of the filter.

The SS Racor is installed. This is a serious chunk of metal!

I needed to relocate to allow for the increased size. I bolted the new Racor unit to a piece of ply and then bolted the ply to the reused old bolt holes.

Looking good. I see a few fish in the bowl, but no water!
