Optimax Engines

Wondering if anyone owns or has owned any of the Mercury Optimax outboards and what your experience has been with it. I have re-powering on the brain for this season's end and since it is an huge investment $$$, I will need months and months of pondering before going ahead and making a purchase. Thanks! Hooper

I have a 2001 225 opti and have had no problems with it in two seasons of fishing. Runs like a champ with lots of power and very fuel efficient. Some people have had major problems however--but I think Merc fixed the issues.

Thanks Dunc

I have heard they are somewhat fussy engines and advanced too making them difficult to own. What could I expect to pay for an engine like yours, a 225hp. Is yours the saltwater series type? I appreciate your feedback, Hooper

word on the street is that mercury has a 250 optimax out that is putting out 275 hp @ the shaft. might be worth a look.

I think they retail around 12k. Bigggest issue with me was following the breakin process and never trolling for more than an houe or so without opening her up to burn off the plugs.

Thanks Dunc, I can probably add 25% to your figure for the curse of living in the Northeast!
