Engine size for '86 23 cc

I have recently bought an 86 23 Center Console in need of a lot of work.

First order of the day will be a new engine. What shaft size will this boat require? 25" or 30". I plan to install a single 225 to 250 HP.

pull out your tape measure and measure from the notch to the keel...

You need to measure your transome. If it was me I would go with the 225 DI. THis engine is based on the same block as the 250 DI. The 225 is plenty of power for your 23 C.C.

I have a 1989 23WA and started checking on repowering earlier this year, I am totally confused at present time. I am running a 200 Mercury, which does just great. Considered a 4 stroke, but, just too much debate on the boards to decide. I will run my 200 until death do us part. Has been a good engine after a powerhead replacement after 140 hours(ouch). I even considered going with a pair of 115 4 strokes, but a lot of weight.

Depending on your budget, you can buy a used rebuilt 225 Yamaha for about 5 grand. If you want to go new, twin 115 Suzuki 4 Strokes are the way I went. They are much faster than a single 225 and get a better hole shot and better fuel economy. Most 225's are topping at 33-35kts while I get 38kts top and cruise 4k at 25.5 kts. The package cost me @14k installed.

The 200, 225 and the 250 are the same weight, If I had to guess I would say they are the same weight as your current 225. And you will hear some rumors soon and its true Johnson is offering a 200 and 225 4 stroke this year. I would still go with the di over the the large 4 stroke.

My 23 has a 250 EFI Merc on it. Cruises easy at 33-36 mph, burning 16-20 gallons per hour according to the flow scan. WOT is upper 40's, and has seen fifty on half tank, full trim, wind just right

250 is a good choice
