Re: Jack plates?

Don,
When repowering our SC earlier this year, my father decided to put a jack plate on so that the new engine could fully tilt out of the water. You may know the story already, so I won't bore you with the details. Anyways, it works great and allows the boat to plane at a lower speed. He went with the RM Industries Rite-Hite manual jack plate with the 6" setback, but it only has 4" of vertical travel so that may not be enough for you. We found after using the boat a few times, some extra stress was placed on the transom due to the new leverage point. We cured that problem by bolting a piece of 1/2" aircraft aluminum across the inside of the splashwell. If you have a new transom, you probably won't run into this problem.

Jack plates?

Hey guys I got a question for all of you.. I have the chance to get a really sweet deal on a 2000 150 Johnson. Here's my problem.. I redid my transom on my 19 about two years ago and when I did I left it at 20" for my motor, plus i've never had a problem with water and it has the factory splash well and I wanted to leave it orginal. Has any one ever put a 25" motor on a Jack plate and used it on a 20" transom?. The transom is perfect and I built it out more then normal so the strenght is there.. What do you think?

Hi Don,
I installed a fixed height jack and it seemed to work great for 10 years. I just found out that I should have raised the motor since it has about 5" set back. So make sure that you take that into consideration when mounting it. I have had to trim way up to improve performance and keep water from spraying in the boat. See my thread on raise it an inch.

Don,
I just ordered from Bob's Machine Shop a 2 1/2" set back jack that is designed to do what you want and I did but will adjust for the correct height. For every inch of setback you need to go up 1/2". This will do it and then some. I did not find a TH that did the height plus setback height and all for $195. I bought the fixed height TH product and it is the same as what I already had. Robert at BOB's was very knowledgeable and he explained that this was the correct product for me. I'm going to install the new and get rid of the old. Check with JOE on the height and how he is getting it done.

Re: Jack plates?

Don since your transom is new no problem with the jack plate. We use the T&H bracket which works just fine. I have a boat in the shop that we are using this bracket on to bring it up 5". It will be here till Sat. if you want to look at it.

Thanks for the input. If the deal goes though on the motor, I'm planing on making a my own bracket. I'm not smart enough to figure out the 1/2 back -1' up thing. So i'm going to make a saddle plate that will use the current holes and then expend up 5" and have new holes for the motor. A saddle out of 3/8" alum fully welded then preped and powder coated white. This should keep almost everthing the same and not create any new issues.

Don,
I'm not sure if that will work, I think maybe I should take that motor off your hands. I really don't want you wasteing your time(I know with the new baby and all time is very precious).

Pat,

That's very true, so if things don't work out I will be more then happy to pass it on to you.

Don,
Your reply seemed a little too serious...You know I was just razzing you

Your set-up sounded fine and your boat should fly with a 150. I'm positive it will work.

But keep you eyes open for another good deal, I will be trying to rebuild my transom this winter. I think I found a garage about 2 miles from my house in Pa. It's for rent, I just have to check how much per month, and if I can use it to work in(instead of just for storage).

Take Care,
Pat

Re: Jack plates?

Pat.. No problem I was just agreeing with you, because all of those things are factoring into this project. The guy with the motor wants to trade work for it. The motor is alomst new and worht a good buck, I'm just not sure I can throw enough pipe at this guys boat to make it work out, with out putting out some cash.
