Re: Need 1/4" pre-laid fiberglass sheet
Alan
I posted this before There is some new material on the market which is "Expanded Foam PVC" I used this stuff vs starboard for the gauges & back board. It can be cut, sanded, routed, shaped, painted, sealed and it's waterproof and stiff. It comes in white and a grey color in it's raw state and is available in different thickness 1/8" thru 1".Check with your local sign manufactures. It's light in weight and very ridged. If not, there is an outfit here in Stuart,Fl called "Fantastic Plastics" (772)223-8005 who carries it. I think Mark Lewis is having some replacement parts manfactured for his boat at this place. Just some alternative options for you |
Re: Need 1/4" pre-laid fiberglass sheet
Capt Chuck,
Thx, I will call them, or maybe see a distrib at the NY Boat Show this weekend. The reason I was looking for glass, is because I already have one pc that's enough to do where the steering/helm mounts I was hoping to get supplemental material to do the whole thing in glass. Does the stuff you're refering to have a smooth or textured surface ? Most important - it is completely sealable ? Durable ? Holds up well to UV ? Thx, Alan |

Yes to all your questions. Smooth texture. You can glue and seal it with boat caulk. If you can't find it locally to get a hands on look & feel I'll send you a sample. |

ABL - is it something you are looking to blend and fair in?

Re: Need 1/4" pre-laid fiberglass sheet
abl1111- call Raka http://www.raka.com/ as they may sell the panels you are looking for. Also John R posted a link a while ago that was a plastic supplier and many of them have wood texture plastic and they will custom cut it. You may have to do a little searching. Also you can make one like Trader shows in his site http://www.classicseacraft.com/Moldingtable.htm

Need 1/4" pre-laid fiberglass sheet
I am looking to buy 1/4" pre-laminated fiberglass w/ white gelcoat on one side.
I want to use this stuff to trace out a new gauge panel and a new glove box as replacements for my original teak grained 'stuff' on my Tsunmai Any idea where to buy this ? I only need a small amount.. Alan |

Re: Need 1/4" pre-laid fiberglass sheet
Alan ...Is there a reason why your not just glassing the areas over ??
I took the Formica wood grain panel off, built a replacement panel out of Gel coat and Fiberglass( the whole molding table route) and thought why not just glass and fair the dash panel .... which is what I did...came out great |
Re: Need 1/4" pre-laid fiberglass sheet
Hmmmm. I like the fiberglass idea - that's why I was trying to buy it pre-made ( it seems like a decent amount of mat and a little work to make 1/4" thick panels ) And, I have so much other glassing and things to do, that it is worth it for me to just buy what I need - if I can buy it cheaply enough.
As to gallsing it in: I want to use a panel that can be fully pull forward / removed, allowing me to gain access to behind the panel when I need to do electrical work on the gauges etc. Thx for the idea though. |
