question stringers pulled away from transom

looked at seacraft 20 1977 looked as if the end of stringer where it attached to the transxom has a gap between the stringer and transon right under the hatch lid on the port stern what could this be or what has happened or am i looking at possible nothing but extra fiberglass cloth...thanks

That is where the livewell was isn't it? If that boat had the livewell in the port side like most of the Potter 20's, the stringers stopped short of making it to the transom and the baitwell actually provided structural support (it was that way in mine at least).

On my 77 sceptre 20, the stringer is part of the transom so to speak. The stinger is tied into the transom. If the stinger has water in it, it will get to the transom. It is tied into the transom, before the transom is glassed in. Small wonder all the transoms need to be replaced.
