Sending unit installation??

Hi gents-

my sending unit crapped out. I first checked to see if it was the fuel gauge by disconnecting both wires at the tank, crossing them, and then turning on ignition. My gauge and one of John R's spare gauges...both went past the full mark...which as I understand means that the gauge(s) are good and the sending unit is bad.

My question to you...is there anything special I need to know about installing a new sending unit. To me, it looks like I disconnect the two wires, unscrew 5 hex bolts, remove unit & gasket, and replace with new unit & gasket, and reconnect wires. Anything else? Also...any idea as to how much a sending unit costs??

As always, thanks in advance.

JOHN R- Do you want me to send you that fuel gauge back? If so, let me know your address so I can drop it in the mail. Thanks!

Ed,
Figures this happens one day before you head to Nantucket. Hopefully you get it taken care of today. Although with the way that engine idles so low, you could just spit gas at the carbs and she'll run!

BTW, I got my package yesterday, thanks buddy!

It will help if you line up the correct bolt pattern and make a mark on both the new and the tank as they have to be lined up the same way they came off. Another way to test it after it is out or your new one is to put a Volt Ohm meter on it and check for resitanse as there will be none with the float all the way up and more as the float goes down towards the empty postion. Also use a nice torqe pattern (opposites and light until they are all snug)when installing the new unit. craig

Come to the next MSBA meeting and bring the guage and my Tubes - no need to ship it.,..

Ed, Tempo makes 2 sizes depending how high your
tank is, about 25-30 bucks. i think the bolt
pattern is pretty standard.

I put a new Teleflex universal sending unit in today. I think I cut it too short but it is working for now.

When i get back from my fishing trip, I will hunt down something a little more exact. Universal fit is bs in my book.

Pray to the tuna gods for me.

Re: Sending unit installation??

Ed ... there are a couple of "non moving part" sending units that use pressure to measure tank volume .... and there is another that uses a magnetic field ..... as long as you have unobstructed access to the tank ... saw it at one of the boat shows .... looks real good but its not cheap

Good luck on the trip and have a safe one !!!!!

Just make sure it is properly grounded. Measure
the old units length and cut the new one the same.
Don't reverse the float swith: I did. Kept reading
empty until I reversed it.

Sorry. That should read switch and not swith.
