20 Sceptre Restore update

For those of you who might be interested, I finally (almost ) finished the paint job. Still have four hatches , motor well, and eventually the bottom to paint. But overall the hard stuff is done. Sorry Jim (ebeach) didn't intend to copy your color choice but the wife said she wouldn't go out if I painted it Red, and I've already done ice blue... so yellow it is. Also a couple of the steps leading to the paint. Hope the photos show up

Re: 20 Sceptre Restore update

Great looking paint job. I am getting ready to have mine painted and was going to paint it Dark Blue Awlgrip but have been advised that it is harder to maintain and fix scratches. I am now thinking of Ice Blue. Did you like this color? Positives/Negatives? I am about a weeks worth of sanding away from needeing to decide on the paint. Did the Ice Blue get many compliments? I appreciate any insight you may have. I do love the yellow but wanted to go something a little less common around Charleston.
Thanks, CMB

I liked the Ice Blue. It was easy to maintain and got compliments every time I went out. I was going to go dark as well but the prep work has to be absolutely perfect because every imperfection shows in a dark color. I thought my prep work was good but I repaired a lot of spidercracks in the bow from hanging on davits for 6 years and thought they might still show thru. I'm glad I went with the light color. Also, If you are painting with AwlGrip, I've found that if you let each coat tack up 35 to 45 min, then there is a lot better chance of repairing a small sag or a run in the last coat. I had a small sag towards the stern that looked like a mini mountain range, but it was only in the last coat. I was able to sand it out with 800 and 1500 grit wet sand and buff out. I can't even tell where it was now.

Dave,

Great job! The boat looks fantastic. The rub rail will have a nice contrast too.

Send me your address, and I'll get that stuff out to you. I've been busy using the boat.

Jim

Jim, My address is on the way.
What did you end up using for rub rail? was it the Taco Kit?

That70s just curiously why did you decide to change colors? Also, is there anyway you could e-mail me a bigger picture of the boat when it was Ice Blue. My e-mail is ChristopherMBarnes@yahoo.com

I appreciate the response and again good job on the yellow!

Dave,

yes, I used the Taco kit. I believe it was V11-2423. Worked great, and I used the method posted on the site by securing at the bow with 1 screw and pulling it tight straight back and then pulled it out and into postion along the joint. This method allows you to align everything before screwing it in.

Re: 20 Sceptre Restore update

Cm, sorry about the confusion but I didn't change colors. I changed boats. The ice blue was on my old 23 Sceptre and the Yellow is on the 20 Sceptre I'm restoring now. I wen't with the yellow because I've already done the blue. Heres a link to the blue 23

This gallery has all the pics of the 23.

That70s,
Your boats look great. I'm just curious as to how many coats of paint you applied? Also, am I correct in assuming you sprayed Awlgrip?
I have a 20'CC that will need painting sometime next year after the restoration is complete? I have never painted a boat (or anything else) but am considering spraying with awlgrip? Any suggestins or comments for a novice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks - Will
