canvas dye-ing
 

I have an almost brand-new red canvas that came with my boat. Can this be dyed a different color ? I want to dye it black if possible.

Hey Abl- when I used to do auto upholstery we use to dye a lot of vinly. I would think that you would be able to do it with Acrylic(sunbrella) but have never tried. If you have a local paint store specialist you might check with them, good luck. craig

I know your trying to keep the cost down on the project ... but I would think a lot of the canvas (esp. new stuff) has water/weatherproofing in it .... I would think that would cause problems for re dying....I would want to maintain that weather proofing as much as possible ....esp on those damp foggy days we get up here .... it will rain on you under your Top [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img]

The other thing I just envisioned was the top bleeding all over your "new" and restored boat if its not done right [img]/images/graemlins/ooo.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/mad.gif[/img]

I agree with Scott. I would put the "ky-Bosh" on the dying deal [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] I think you would being creating a nightmare of future problems [img]/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] The waterproofing would never be the same.
I don't know what kind of canvas you have but I ruined my first Sunbrella T-Top by just washing it with soap and a soft deck brush. The only think that hits the canvas now is rain and a fresh water rinse. [img]/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

I hear ya guys. It was just an idea. I just don't like the red top - it's too bad too, 'cause it's brand new. I'm painting the bottom black - it's red now. Red = Florida thing ?

If I could dye it and it would work, I would do it, just for a year or two, so I could save some $$ to put on a really nice full canvas enclosure.

Alan,
You may be able to dye it and then spray with waterproofing (silicone?) just to get you through till you can spring for the new top. The bimini on my dad's Sceptre ocassionally leaks and he sprays it with some type of silicone that does the trick. Certainly temporary, but it works and since the current top isn't torn or faded, he's not ready to replace it just yet.
