Can anyone offer advice on the appropriate gear for surf fishing and what might be out there in the middle of April?

The gear would only get used maybe 2x each year by a fast learning novice. [img]/images/graemlins/cool.gif[/img]

Why don't Ya just walk over to that beached 27' & fish with conventional Tackle off the stern ?

Otto, What's Up? My brother and I would like to meet you while you and your family are here. Hope you didn't think I was kidding about the station tours. Oh Yeah, I would not recommend spending much time or money planning to surf fish. There are very small windows of opportunity for red fish on the outside, never seen one caught from the beach, and I think it's usually in the fall. Kids may enjoy 12-18" black tip, bonnet head sharks. You will be staying close to some productive fresh water ponds if that helps. Not sure of what you do for work, but any chance you will be at Mt. Dora, Fla. for the annual antique and classic boat show 3-26--28?

As I mentioned, we'll be on South Forest Beach Drive for 2 weeks. Bought an inexpensive Cabellas/Penn 10' surf casting combo so I'd have something to do while we're at the beach. Saw a guy land a 4' shark last spring.

I'm bringing the 16 Whaler and hope to spend some cruising time to Charleston and Savannah. I'll call you before we leave to coordinate your scheduale and the station tour. Wait till you see all these kids! [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Otto - don't know what to tell you for fishing there from the beach. Season is probably wrong for funny fish, spannish macks, and as mentioned above, red drum (I'm guessing here). Also the methods are different. The little tuna / span macks might go for something you'd toss with a lighter 9' stick and a spinning rod, the drum you would need to cast "8 & bait" on a 10' heaver - 2 different rigs and methods.

'course the good thing is if you can catch fish from the beach, catching from a boat is easy [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img]
