motor well access hatch

I bought a 20'Seacraft CC about one year ago and the motor well hatch(if you can call it that)is makeshift. What i have is a 6" x12" opening that someone made.It has 4 pieces of 1-2" wood adhered to the glass outlining the opening with 6 bolts stuck up throught the pieces of wood.then there is a solid rubber material that goes over the bolts and wood and finally a piece of aluminum over the top held on by wingnuts. Can you find the genius that made this? I'm open for suggestions

Sounds like the previous owner took a CREATIVE HATCH COVER CLASS. The previous owner of my boat must have taken a creative plumbing class and a creative wood working class I guess that would account for the two nails I found hammered in the deck.

I figured I would do a separate comment for your hatch. You can get several sizes of hatches from good marine stores and even special order sizes they don’t carry. I would check out that option first if you can’t find one you like you can fabricate a permanent fill in section for that area and then buy a hatch that’s size is what you want instead of what you were presented with.

First off, I won't ask what nails were doing hammered in the deck of your boat.I spoke to a friend of mine who's boat is a twin to mine but a 1987 mine's a 86. His access to the bilge is a standard circular cover that twists off.I have looked into the hatches and nothing matches the size cutout I have and Ihave no more room to accomidate a larger opening.Do you have any info on a maker that does custom hatches?would love to get the thing sealed up watertight
Thanks for the help

I have talked to company reps at boat shows that said they can make anything you need. But that was a few years ago and I can’t remember who they are. If you don’t want to do it your self I am sure a good fiberglass fabrication guy could help you out.
