Raise transom w/o major rebuild
 

Hello Boys,

Well, it's been a long winter up here in MN but the boat is out of storage and I need to do a few things before she hits the water. I had a local guy rebuild my transom for me two years ago and it turned into a total hack job (uneven finish and little cracks in the finish already). Several lessons learned there. Anyway, I imagine I will need to redo the job at some point but for now I need to use as is (it has run fine for the last two years). One thing I would like to do is get through the glass on the "top" of the transom and see if the wood is dry (I'll have a bunch of follow up questions if it isn't). When I am convinced it is okay I'll need to reseal it but would like to raise it about an inch so it is as high as the motor bracket will allow. Is this a pretty bad idea? If not, what kind of material can I use to add 1" to the height?

I don't know about adding an inch to the top, but the best way to check for wood rod is by using a drill. You can drill some holes accross the top of. When you want to reseal the holes, tape off the area around the holes. Then mix up a batch of epoxy and cabosil and fill the holes. Before the epoxy cures completely use a razor blade and remove the excess (just like cutting the top off a carrot).
