One More Step

Yesterday Tim Barber aka BigShrimpin came over and together we mounted my motor bracket.
I made a template from the old mold and used that for the hole pattern for the bracket.

I placed the bracket in the appropriate location on the boat and traced the holes onto the transom. I drilled out all the holes thru the transom stepping up bits as I went until I got 1/16 of an inch bigger then my bolt diameters. Tim and I swabbed the holes with epoxy using two round brushes in order to seal them should water ever get into the bolt holes. The transom on my boat is 3 1/2 inches thick.

I had a welder punch out a bunch of SS square backing plates that we used for washers.

We used 8-1/2 inch diameter SS bolts thru the flotation chamber and 6-3/8 inch ss bolts, three on each wing of the swim platform.

We then 5200ed the crap out of the back of the bracket and bolted it on tight. It is now married to the boat "till death due they part". The top of bracket were the motor will mount is 28.5 inches above the keel of the boat. I have a 25 inch shaft Yamaha 250 that is going on the bracket. Here are a couple pics of the project. Tim and my brother are standing on the bracket in one of the pics.

Looks great! Without seeing it in person I would say it is very similar if not an exact copy of Mr. Potters patented fiberglass bracket. If you don't mind my asking how did you come up with the design?

Thanks Don,

Thats a real compliment coming from you.

Lets just say that the internet is a wonderful resource. Lots of pictures of fiberglass brackets floating around out there.
As you know from our conversations over the phone I was looking for something with a little bigger flotation chamber then the single engine bracket. If my engine was a 30 incher I probably would have bought the twin engine bracket you sell as that would have worked great and saved me a lot of effort and time that it took to make this thing. For several months I kept thinking that I could probably make my own bracket if I put my mind to it. The hardest part was getting started.

Sierra Nevada - one my favorites - too bad you can't get Harpoon Winter Warmer out there - Ask Tim, he's probably had that one before...
