Transom Replacment?
 

Why not use a composit on an offshore boats transom?

I have had another estimate done on my transom yesterday and his guys won't warranty a anything but a wood replacment transom. He's think it will cost about $8000
to repair/rebuild it.

I don't have an educated opinion, but I would think the composit would last longer than wood?!?

I understand from a members previous post that the CSY 23' boats did not have wood in the transom . I am currently looking at one and the transom seems rock solid . A surveyor did a moisture guage test and said it passes with flying colors . I guess what I'm trying to say is here's an example of a 20 year old boat with supposedly no plywood in the transom that held up well . The boat I'm looking at supports your position . I'm also not an expert .

$8K to replace a transom is absurd! The guy I sold my old o/b Tsunami to just replaced the transom in it in Feb. prior to repowering with twin Evinrude 130's, and replacing the transom and raising it to 30" cost him $2800, and his highest estimate given to him was $3500.
They cut off the glass covering on the back, dug and ground out the wood, sanded, put in new wood, and glassed the original glass & gelcoat back on. It took 4 days.

North east ....anywhere from 3.5 -5K for a new transom from a reputable yard….that’s for a straight forward notched transom re-core …I’m sure the euro transom complexes the rebuild

I'm not sure why it's so expensive around here. Some of you know I have received estimates as high as $14K for the same transom job. This guy wants to put "transom stringers" in...what ever they are. The guy who wants $14K was going to put knees in like the newer SeaCraft (2003 and later).

One thing that adds to the cost is having to remove deck area in front of the engines. It's all one piece all the way to the bow.

Transom re do is 80% sweat 20% Skill any one including me can do one if you have enough time and enough beer. It took me approx 7 days to do with 36 Budweiser’s and approx $500 of cash. If I were to do another I would use the composite material which would up the price to approx $700-900 depending of my choice of material.

It's about $350 for a 1 1/2in sheet.
The transom "Stringer's" and "Knees" are probely the same thing called diffrent things by diffrent people. That's my guess.
