capt. chairs vs back to back

The deck under my capt, chairs in the Sceptre is a little soft. The chairs wobble. I have T nutted them but they keep getting loose. Should I replace with back to backs or is there an easy way to correct this? The chairs are too tall and I will be cutting at least 4 inches off posts if I keep them. The only time i sit is at trolling speed. What do you guys think? Scotty.

Back to back seats do have their advantages, but simply replacing the pedestal seats with them isn't going to fix your problem. You really need to pull the pedestals out and fix the issue at the source....the rotten deck core. Unless you do that, you're going to end up with a completely rotten deck at some point and that is a sh*tload of work to get fixed. Address the deck core now, before it becomes a major problem.

Once you have the deck core replaced, then you should be able to either remount the pedestals securely or install your back to back seats.

Personally, I would stick with the pedestals. But if you need additional storage, consided building some boxes to mount the pedestals on.

Just my $.02. Good luck.

What Brian said...definitely address the rotten core issue first before changing the seating arrangement.

IMO, pedestals on top of boxes are the way to go in this boat. My father's '82 has factory boxes molded into the liner and they work great for storage. Originally they were plumbed overboard so they could have been used as coolers, baitwells, etc., but my father glassed over the drains - 2 less thruhull fittings to worry about.

I like the idea of pedistals on top of boxes. if there is room to still get at cuddy I may go that root. Floor doesnt seem rotted just someone went too high with the posts and it's pulled the threads out .

There's plenty of room on my father's boat, probably 2 feet between the boxes, so cuddy access is not an issue. The boat is getting hauled this weekend so I should be able to email or PM you a picture.

Scotty,
Having just read one of your other posts, I now realize you have a 20-foot Sceptre. My father's is a 23 so his setup may not help you out after all. I'll still send the pix, but I thought I'd let you know we're comparing apples to oranges.
