1972 23' Seacraft
Hello there,
i am new to this board. found this board as i was looking to buy a DIY 1972 23' seacraft noticed that the 1972 does not have the "plannning steps" at the transom compared to the 73 model. further the inside of the 72 does not have the recessed handrail. would appreciate some feedback on the following question. - obviously there is a good reason why so many of these boats are being restored..... - how does a 23' ride in a 3 foot seas? looks like the 72 has a deeper v? - does it plane well at low speed 15-20mph? it looks like the hull on the 73 planes much better then the 72? - does the 1973 and up model rides better than the 72 and older? - are these hull dry when quatering seas with 10mps winds? thank you |

If you mean it is missing the distinct variable deadrise hull, it might not be a SeaCraft. |

Welcome to CSC!
I don't know what two hulls you are comparinghttp://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung...smiley-013.gif but there should be NO difference in the Variable Deadrise between the 1972 and 1973 SeaCraft. The 23' rides like it was on steriods in a 3' chop compared to other planning type hulls Member "SEAFARI" can answer all your questions regarding interior differences on the '72'and '73 models but as far as the interior grab rail goes, I think somebody has removed it if it's missing. |

23s have had essentially the same hull for over 30 years. You might be looking at a different boat.

Re: 1972 23' Seacraft
edloh,
All years of the 23 hull are the same. The 23 hull has perhaps the best ride in a head sea of any boat in her class. A 3' "sea" is nothing. A 3' chop is where she really (starts to) perform. Trim tabs and your skill will determine your final ride... A quartering sea with a 10 MPS (22 MPH) wind has the potential to be a wet ride in any boat. There again, the use of trim tabs and some skill will determine what those conditions would be like. Our closely spaced waves on Lake Ontario are far different than those on the Atlantic's open water. IMHO, I would not consider the 23 a wet ride. Your slowest planing speed will depend on payload, weight distribution, etc. Trim tabs will play the biggest role in keeping the hull on plane at "slow" speeds. There are a number of members on this site that will be willing to give you a ride on a 23 if you bring BEER. You can pick a snotty day and find out the truth for yourself. Best of luck in your endevours and Happy Holidays. |
Re: 1972 23' Seacraft
The 72 had a different hull cap that was seamed in
the transom area with 3/4" aluminum trim. No lip on the outside of the splash well. I asked Potter about this and took him a while to remember the few 23's that had it. Also smaller stern lockers, older style console, no transom baitwell drain and no recessed deck plates in the floor hatch. The first 23's were offered in a F-23 and a SF-23. The hull bottom has the same Mosley hull design. |
Re: 1972 23' Seacraft
it is missing the variable deadrise hull. thank you all for the feedback. let me say that this site is very impressive. is there a particular year that offer the optional head in the console and one that i should be looking out for to restore? i am in the houston, TX. let me know if thers is a 23' owner our there.

Capt. C is in Houston. He has a newer 25'CC. He knows alot about what to look for in a SeaCraft hull...

Mine 73 had the head in it, they offered a 2ft deep head option with the master console. The toilet paper holder was the first thing to go when I bought the boat. R |
