Deck drains on 20's

20’ Fisherman that I’ve seen seem to have two different systems for draining the deck. One involves large holes in the deck piped to smaller openings in the bottom of the hull. These openings are usually (?) located right behind a wedge molded into the hull (venturi effect?).
The second type of system consists of small holes in the face of the engine well connected to slightly larger (?) openings in the face of the transom.

In terms of production dates/model year, was the type of deck drainage an owner option, or was it a design or a production changed. If it was the later, does anyone know when this change took place?

dcobbet my 69 i/o had the scupper through the transom and my 73sf has them in the floor so the change was somewhere between those years

My '79 MA, mfg in Sept 78, has drains out the transom. A buddy's '78 MA (mfg May 78)told me his drains out the bottom. You mentioned that a 1980 MA had the drain in the bottom of the hull. I don't know what to make of that. Perhaps the transom drain was not well received and they went back to a bottom drain configuration??

BTW, the transom drain is horrible unless you use ball scuppers. Every time you stop water will rush into the boat from the back pressure.

My December 1978 Manfufactured 23' was out the transom also. The glassed in tee you see was added by me for draining water from around a floor hatch.

So, maybe it was an option, or at least a customer choice situation. I'm looking at a 20MA (hull ID # SECM00180780) and they go through the bottom of the hull (unlike Roger's MA, which I believe is a 79). Did SeaCraft ever put seacocks on these openings?

This should have been an option in 72'
