New Transom Layout SC 20
 

Here is a shot of the new 3/4" marine plywood floor for my 20. I have raised it up 2.25". The floor is glassed on both sides, vacuum bagged with epoxy and 1 layer of DB120 on each side. There are 5 stringers running across, made from 2 layers of plywood, 3" wide, with a 12oz uni glass layer top and bottom for stiffness.

This floor is stiff! Right now it is only touching on the very sides off of the old floor, and it only sags about 1/4" with my 200 lbs. in the middle!

I will post on how to bag a floor like this in 1 piece, in 1 opperation. It was a project, but the result is very nice.

This is one idea, with the face of the aft, center floor sloping downward to a 2" x 1/2" recessed well, draining through scuppers. I will probably pitch the floor towards the centerline as well.

Any thougts or comments? I was really close to cutting out everything from the back, but decided that this layout would be okay and much easier to do.

Also a pic of the side/tool room of our workshop. Not a lot of room, but it is inside for the weekend!

Mine is now pitched towards the centerline and drains better for it.

Not sure I understand what you have done. Are the new, 3" x 1-1/2" stringers actually sleepers laid side to side (perpendicular to the hull's centerline) and then vacume bagged to the underside of the new deck, and then the whole piece is laid in over the old deck? If so, how would you introduce pitch to the center, and how are you going to tab the edges of the deck into the sides of the liner?

Nice progress Peter. Are you hoping it'll be ready for the worm hatch?

The sleepers are glassed to the underside of the new floor, across the CL, to provide support. They are 2 3" x 3/4" strips of ply, glued together with uni glass top and bottom, and then screwed to the underside of the floor and buried under the DB120 that covers the entire underside.

When I install the floor, I will tie these sleepers to the hull stringers (exposed as I have removed 80% of the old floor) with blocking and goop, and then fillet and glass the edges of the new floor to the liner. There is a small recess in the edge of the new floor, under the glass, that will accept the tabbing. You can see where the hull liner is ground, which is where I will put the new glass.

My feeling is that when this floor is attached to the old stringers and the hull liner, it will be totally bomb proof. It is stiff enough now that I was tempted to skip the blocking, but it will add so much strength that I will do it.

I am not exactly sure how I will pitch the floor to CL; the first sleeper is 18" forward, so the aft edge is a bit flexible. I left a 10" wide section of the old floor across the back, which I will probably use to pull the new floor down in the middle. I think if I can get 1/2" or so, that will do it.

I have also made the floor about 3/4" short in the back, so that I can make a fillet waterway under the tabbing, which should also help get water to the center. If this whole arrangement does not work so well, I will just add drain tubes from the corners to the transom.

Here is a photo that may be easier to understand than my trying to describe it. The floor is pitched in towards the centerline in the aft section of the boat. BUT, the last 12" before the transom, it is bowed so as to be 1/4" higher in the center - this funnels the water into the two scupper holes:
