I installed ping pong balls on my stern to do the same thing but I'm a little disappointed in how much water comes back through them.

The hull was freshly painted, and I used silicone chaulk between the mounting plate and the hull so I don't think it's leaking by there. The items are brand new so they never had a chance to get dirty. I wonder if the balls aren't sitting on the mating surfaces properly?
