replacing potter self-bailing deck fitting,
 

noticed that my deck drain tube on my 76 sceptre 23' is corroded from the outside. what is the easiest way to replace this fitting ? thanks

Try searching the site as this has been addressed by several here.

Given that they are corroded that is something you want to fix now.. those tubes go bad and the blocks that they are mounted in are bad …. its a direct water inlet to the bilge.

Mine did the same thing. I had to drive a heavy screw driver behind the brass tubes(from under the boat) and crush/collapse them to get them out. My tubes where in with some sort of silicon like product. The blocks in the hull , under the deck that they mount in , while solid, were very wet so they had to dry out. The brass tube was found at a Boston Whaler dealer, as they were the only ones to have the same diameter tube in a long enough length to replace the original tubes.

Miles Offshore re-did his with pvc pipe and epoxy or poly resins which eliminated the corrosion issue. More work than sliding new tubes in but Much better solution in my eyes than the tubes that can go bad again.

I'm gonna re-route mine thru the transom and I wish I had taken the extra time to do it when I had the boat half torn apart. I just think that they are an accident waiting to happen. Plug them up and go thru the transom thats what I'd do.

feeling through the service ports, it felt like the fitting is enclosed in fiberglass. how is the set-up on other boats?

The scupper in mine goes through a block of wood that is tabbed in the bilge with a layer of woven. Mine is not mounted in fiberglass.

CSICKNICK and I were just chatting about this for his 20 Seafari. I told him to yank out the originals, glass them over and run new scuppers out through the transom or out the sides of the hull, like Mark did.
