140 Johnson 4s for 20 cc?
 

Hello all, what an awesome website. I just purchased a 1977 20 SF. I am going to glass in the transom and install a bracket and repower. I found a deal on a 140 Johnson 4 stroke but was originally going with a 200 Yamaha hpdi or efi. 2 questions: Is this enough power for this boat?
What bracket would you install with a swim platform? (the potter bracket is out of my price range) I know most of these topics have been addressed, but would like to see new opinions. Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome Riffraff to CSC !

I have not seen to many 20' with brackets as these boats are heavy in the stern to begin with. Unless you install a positive flotation bracket like the Potter (SeaMark) you will be adding hurt to the injury [img]/images/graemlins/frown.gif[/img] Most guys raise the floor (wet feet issues) and compensate by increasing the transom height to 25".

May I suggest you use the search function for past threads on these recomendations. I think the 140hp 4 banger would push the 20'models just fine although several SeaCrafters on this forum like to dig bugs out of their teeth and mount 200ph power packs on them... I have a friend who just went from a 2-3 year old Evinrude 150 to a new Evinrude 135 (I believe Ficht) and he says he sees almost no difference in performance, just less gas consumption. No bracket. 1970's 20' CC.

I just put a 140 suzuki four stroke (same motor) on a 76 20 cc it's plenty fast.

I found this picture of how I would like to rig my boat...it has a bracket and fully glassed transom. Do you think I will have to raise the floor? My intent is to use a flotation bracket. I should contact Jwilliams and pick his brain! Blackfin, how fast is plenty fast??

200 HP is great on a 20. When you put 4 250lb. guys in the boat you will be glad you have the extra muscle.
I put the four blade on when I know it is going to be a heavy load. If it is me and my 110lb wife. The 3 blade 21
tops out at around 62mph. Photo in the Keys with tower up.
and ready for Bug season. Of which next week the NoBones will make its annual trip to Islamorada for the 2 day Lobster season. Hope to see a few more SeaCraft's there.

Hey No Bones, nice boat. Do you have any problems with it self bailing with the 200 and tower? (addl weight)

No, I used the Rabud "ping pong" ball scuppers. They are below the water line and work great. When I replaced the
deck, I raised it up 2 inches from the foam stringers.
Even with a heavy down pour it gets out quick. Ken
