What are the advantages and disadvantages to enclose transom mount and transom mount engine? Should perform like larger boat?

Warthog, That was a great link. But now I have a question. Have you guys with the O/B brackets raised your engine higher in the water then the original like the article said or do you keep the original hight.
With the extra boyancy does it ride better at a troll then before?

Mike, The reason so many boatbuilders have gone to with a bracket is twofold. More room in the transom and a better ride. I have twin 115 4'strokes on a bracket (23ft) and love the boat even more. It rides like a bigger boat, when in the rough stuff the azz end stays in the water better, my wife likes the extra space to have deck chairs and I can now have a 40 gallon removable bait well and still have room to move about. As for mounting the engines higher, yes my cavitation plates are at least 2-4 inches above the hull bottom. I don't get any prop blow out and my speed probably is 1-2kts higher overall.

Anyone with a 23' that has done a bracket job would never go back to mounting the motors on the transom. I belive cost is the real factor. Plan on anywere from $3500 on up to the sky for a well done job. [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]

Thanks Brian, I knew the bennifits but I didn't know about the change of hight. Thats good to know.
I will try to make my brackets myself since I have the time, machines and material. I will use aluminum. Any advice is welcomed. I was just going to scales what I've seen on line.
What are you guys thinking when it comes to platforms? I'm thinking of putting them on mine. Any good reason not to?

Yes, My boat was designed for 20in shaft's. The bracket is installed for 2- 25in shaft's. It moves the powerhead higher to keep it out of the wash better.

Mike, the only mistake with my bracket was taking their advice to have it powder coated rather than awlgripped. It has lost its initial lustre and scratches rather easily.

Yep, Powdercoating is overated. Even the powdercoting guy told me that.
I had mine blasted and then sprayed it with Deft epoxy [Black/greenish] primer. I top coated that with 545 Awlgrip epoxy primer. The 545 is a primer/surfacer. The Deft is used on Fighter aircraft on their landing gear. This stuff is tenacious. My brother had a small crack in the custom alum tree stand's he build's. He had to grind it away. Then he put the TIG torch to it. It didn't even blister, just a slight color change.
