Strange engine noise?
I have a 2003 Johnson 150 hp. I hear like a "cling cling" sound when i slowly turn the prop by hand (in neutral). Is this normal? Any idea what can be?

Re: Strange engine noise?
Not sure what causes the noise, but my '89 Johnson 225 does the same thing. I don't believe it is anything to worry about though.

Re: Strange engine noise?
My 1999 250hp does it also.
BTW: I don't know about Scott but just like the gas pump noise, the "Cling Cling" noise for every turn of the prop in my engine signifies approx $5.78 an hour @ 4000 rpms |

Re: Strange engine noise?
2 possibility
1. the shift linkage is not correctly adjusted (not in neautral). move the gear shifter linkage and if it goes awaym you found your problem. 2. if you have mnetal shavingm suspect internal damage (mine was doing htat ). had to take it apart to find out. |
Re: Strange engine noise?
I think almost every outboard does that. My 1998 Suzuki 225 does it as well.

Re: Strange engine noise?
It's the foward clutch dog clicking.. not a problem. The dog locks when your in gear and slip when its out of gear. It does this so that when your powered up and pull the power back it doesn't over torgue you lower unit...
