trailer bunk question
 

I'm about to switch the old Seafari trailer from rollers to bunk. What size are the bunks on the trailers you guys have under your 20' boats? Is a good 2x4 enough, or should I use a 2x6? It's about 8' between the front and rear cross-member. It seems to me that the keel rollers should be taking most of the weight, not the bunks. Is this true? Any comments appreciated. Time to get the old Seafari in the water!

My Continental came with 2x6 extra long bunks. We had to cut about 2 feet off the ends that were extending way out from the aft end of the boat. Even now I still have about a foot extending back from the stern. My boat's weight rests on the keel rollers and the bunks are there mostly to provide lateral support. I think 2x4 bunks should be enough for this job since our Seafaris aren't that heavy. :rolleyes:

My hull is an '83 20SF. The bunks on my trailer support the full weight of the boat. They are 4x6 cypress about 8' long and located to support the hull under the stringers. The cross members supporting the bunks are about 5' apart. It's the factory setup for this trailer and it works well.

Good point- thanks for reminding me about getting the bunks under the stringers!

Guess I'll see which fits better- 2x4 or 2x6.

Best thing I did 23 secpter was to put bunks on and get rid of rollers.2buy10
