Under Gunnel Rod Holder help
 

With the T Top I have no other rod holders, I need some under the gunnels, anyone have any idea how much room I have to screw them in before I hit the outside hull.

I would recommend you epoxy a strip of plywood just large enough for your rod holder base to cover and screw into the plywood. Probably 1/2 or 3/4 inch plywood completely sealed with epoxy and then mounted under the gunnel (using epoxy-duct tape in place while it dries). I mounted my anchor light clips (used to hold the anchor light when not in use) using this metod on the inside top lip of the cutout for the under gunnel rod storage on my 20 (keeps the light high and dry when not in use). This metod is often mentioned for mounting rod holders in cuddie cabins of boats.

I have carpet all along the side under there and was thinking of making a cut out in the carpet the same size and just expoxy them. As I thought about that, seemed like could get nasty with trying to cut and then remove the carpet and keep it looking good, the carpet may stuck on real good and/or might frizze up the edges.

I am going to use the Berkley Rod Savers rather than the type that came on them.

Cut the carpet with an exacto knife, scrape the carpet out with a screw driver, epoxy the wood in place (using thickened epoxy-no drips) use duct tape to hold in place once dry put a bead of 4200 around the wood at the edge of the carpet to keep the carpet from frizzing up.

20 Master Angler, so plenty of room under the gunnels and I'm sure it had the racks like my 18 but not now. I used the Berkleys on my last boat and like them, they have a rubber backing plate so I could just 4200 them to the side of the boat afetr tearing out a section of carpet. Now if I could put a 1/4" screw in the inside of the gunnel I wouldn't have to tear the carpet up, not much strain.

There's at least 3/4 inch where the floor section meets the hull. You can attach there and under the gunwale cap. There are probably still the fiberglass tabs under the gunwales that used to hold the original rod holders.

After looking today, either the owner replaced the carpet or it never had any, I will just try amd be careful and use very tiny short screws and just screew them on the the underside. There must be a little room between the liner and the outside hull, just scared to get them too close to the hull. Started the pimping :D orders, got the blue LED lights for under the gunnels and the T Top coming.

On the Potter MAs there is no liner. In the below pic, behind the carpet is just the hull.

I don't think the small screws will give enough grip to hold the weight of a rod rack. You need to fabricate under the gunnel cap like in Roger's boat or you can get some PVC board to form ribs and epoxy it to the side then mount the racks/holders to them.
Here are some shots of PVC board I utilized in the same situation for my gaffs. The rod hangers were mounted to the old ribs of the liner ;)
