Can anyone tell me proper fiberglass layup
 

I have a 1972 20 sf that I am currently in the process of restoring. I have the deck and the transom cut out and I am ready to start rebuilding. My question is can anyone tell me the proper layup schedule for the transom. Also what would be the best glass for the deck. Example: for the transom should I start out with woven or fabmat then 1708 or finish cloth and what's best for covering the deck 1 1/2 oz. mat or 1708 or finish cloth. Next does anyone have any preferences on brands of epoxy RAKA or MAS or WEST or US COMPOSITES you get the idea. I'm just looking for good advice before I jump into buying my materials. I should have mentioned this earlier I have the transom cut out from the outside. All replies are greatly appreciated.

I'm using RAKA epoxy on my transom and the stuff is great. I bought the six gallon kit for a substantial savings over just buying the gallons individually. My transom is now finished. It was done from the inside. I'm no expert but this is what I did. First I reinforced the corners of the transom (sides and bottom) with fillets of thickened epoxy and two layers of 1708 tape. Then I laid two layers of 1708 over the existing skin of the transom. Next was the core material (1.5 inch coosa) then three more layers of glass in this order. 1208, 2408, and 1708. That project probably took close to 3 gallons of resin and 1.5 gallons of hardner. Good luck. -will

Will thanks for the info. Did you have any problems getting a good wetout with the RAKA or is the viscosity thin enough to get full saturation easily.

The RAKA worked great for me... esp. in the high heat.
No problems with wet out just make sure and stick to the SLOW hardener... Larry is a good guy to deal with at RAKA.
I started out my project with a 6 gallon kit ended up using about 15 gallons.. ;)

IVE DONE ABOUT 30 TRANSOMS IN THE SHOP HERE IN MASS GRIND THE INSID OF THE TRANSOM . AFTER CUTTING WOOD OR WHAT EVER MATERAIL YOU CHOSE TO USE RESIN IT UP USING NONWAX RESIN I USE THREE LAYERS OF MATAND THEN USE TRANSOM CLAMPS TO SUCURE THE IST PEICE INTO PLACE AFTER THAT CURES UP REPEAT THE STEP WITH 2RD COARSE THEN 2 LAYERS MAT AND A LAYER WOVEN AFTER THIS CURES UP I BUFF THE WHOLE THING UP WITH A COUPLE MORE LAYERS OF FAB MAT
