hello all
 

hi all my name is bryan found you all by doing a google search. any how i am in the current process of looking at a 73 seacraft. my father had one aboult 8 years ago and i remeber how well it rode and how versitle it was. i know that the potter hulls are more prefered. but my questions are what all should i look for in ther boat.

1.My dad said look at the transom for rot and such alike. and for soft spots in the floor.
2 what is the difference in a 20 inch transom and a 25. i understand height difference but which is better? my fathers boat had a gilbracket and jacker plate on it.so i dunno which his was.

Any thing else i should know would be greatley appricated.

Check to see if it was painted and done properly. It needs to be primed first. Some people will not pull the rubrail when painted and that is a easy place to look. Odds are if they did not pull the rail there prep work is kind of shoddy. I would rather deal with bad gelcoat,a weak transom and soft spots in the floor then a bad paint job. But that is just my opinion. (I bought a boat will all the above and a bad paint job. Could not pass on the price.) Anything is repairable if you have the time and money.

well i talked to the guy on the phoone and he told me the floor has a soft spot in it abouit6 inches big. it is right abouve the fish box in the front area. so i will take that into consideration. he also has told me the shift selector shat seal on the motor(merc 175 1985) leaks. is this a big problem or something i can fix and be done with?

The leak at the sifter shaft is an easy and inexpensive fix, but you need to check for water in the lower unit. The seal replacement is under $30 including lower unit lube if you do it yourself.

thank you frank for the info.there is no water in the lower unit . i checked it this morning when i went and looked at the boat.

the soft spot in the floor is about 9 in long and about 6 in wide it runs along side the anchor box in the bow of the boat. the transom is solid,(took a scrach awl and could not get it bearly into the fiber glass, very few spider cracks in the paint. the motor has good compression all cylinders about 130 psi. so iam going to make a offer and see what happens.

Welcome to the CSC Forum Bryan. That '73 with a 175hp will haul azz. Be careful of chine walking at WOT :eek:

my old mans 72 seacraft had a 225 on it with a 20x20 prop that was a scary ride.

i see you are in stuart too hopefully i will see some members like you and others on the water and compare boats.

on a boat note the hull has been repainted once it was it was orginally yellow and is know white.
