redoing deck in 20cc
 

The decks in my 20cc are soft. They were redone 7 years ago by someone that really didnt know what they were doing. THe didnt ptch or crown the decks properly for drainage. also they didnt glass or expoxy coat the underside of the plywood which lead to its rotten state.

I have restored a handful of boats and wouldnt think twice about cutting the decks out to restore.

my question is what should I rebuild the decks out of? and how thick should I make them? I was planing on doing two or three layers of glass and sealing the underside of the decking.

Billy, My brother and I are now in the process of finishing our redo. What we did was one layer of bi-axle on the bottom of 3/4 marine ply. Which we topped off with 1 layer of 1708, and another layer of bi-axle. I hope this helps. Ken

Hey Ken thanks for the reply. did you raise the decks in your 20cc? did you have a problem working with the plywood do to the thickness?

I left the origional gutter channel in the boat. Then, placed the plywood on top to give it some outside support. I made a putty out of resin and cabosil to attach it to the stringers, and level the deck. I am now in the process of fairing in some crowns to get the water flow to the back of the boat.

Billy, I recently did the deck on my 20 as well. I too left the channel on each side and replaced the deck with a material called Penske Board and glassed it. Penske is very strong, good weight and will not absorb any water like plywood, through holes that may leak after time from screws for the console and leaning post. It is a little more $ but it will be the last time you will do the deck. hope this is of some help

penske board looks like some good stuff. how many boards did you use to redo the deck from the step back?

For those of you that have done it before, are there any caveats or recommendations you could make concerning the procedure? I'm not standing in front of mine right now, but I don't remember it having any channels. I know the later Potter's had a different deck design from the earlier ones. Mine has the raised floor under the console so that the console screws are horizontal rather than vertical and the fuel tank is is in the console, so no fuel hatch. How did you go about making the rim that the hatch sits on? I assume the material is not thick enough to simply rout out the lip, but I don't know.
