23 Transom Replacement
 

I have removed the top cap and in the process of removing old transom. I have several basic questions:
1. What is the thickness of the plywood.
2. Approximately how much exposy will be required to install a new transom.
3. The boat is a Sceptre and I plan on having someone Awlgrip the boat - what type of cost should I expect and how many gallons of paint?
I will post some pictures in the very near future of this project.

My 82 Sceptre originally had a sheet of 3/4 @ a sheet of 5/8; I went back with a sheet of 3/4" @ a sheet of 1/2" marine fur. I made up the difference with glass. So being that I used a good bit of extra glass, I ended up using 15 gal of vinalester resin.

Wow :eek: Lost, I just wanted to confirm the amount of resin you used. 15 gallons? Thanks, Greg

My 74 23 Tsunami had a transom plywood thickness of 1-3/8".
I replaced it with two layers of 3/4"marine plywood glued together with epoxy resin thickened to a mayonaise consitency with cabosil.

The finished thickness now,including the inner and outer glass,is 2-1/8".

I used about 3/4 gal of epoxy to glue the plywood together.I'm using polyester for the rest of the project.which incuded the inner transom skin.

I don't remember how much polyester resin i used in the transom alone,but so far i'm up to 11 gallons,and i've done the transom, engine beds,(it's an i/o), recored two hatches, and recored a portion of the deck that was rotted.

I've also used about five gallons of hull and deck putty,that i get from Mertons Fiberglass.
It's a super polyester putty thats very strong,and is great for making a radius on sharp angles,where youre tabbing in,
bedding in cores, filling and fairing low spots,etc.

Not sure how much paint it will take to do a 23,but i think i'm pretty sure that i'll be using a two part urethane.

I would guess about 5 gallons of polyester resin would be enough. It depends on how many paper weights you end up with.

Use a paint tray and roller to spread out the resin.
