Power for a 23 Sceptre

Getting ready to power my Sceptre, looking at a 250 2 stroke Johnson, a 250 and 300 4 stroke Suz. Only about 25 pounds difference in the Suz, not sure about the Johnson. The boat has a 25" transom. The Johnson is about 5 years old but very well kept. The Suz would be new. Any suggestions are welcome - especially specific experience with the above motors.

I have a 1999 250hp Johnson 2 stroke. It is a very thristy motor. At cruise (4200-4400 rpm) according to the Navman, I'm burning approx 16 Gal/Hr :( Although it's like the Eveready Bunny, it keeps "Going & Going"

I also think you would be very happy with the new big 4-strokes if your transom and wallet can handle the weight.
BTW: Nice talking with you the other day....... ;)

At 3 bucks a gallon, if you can swing it, I would be looking at the 4 stroke. If you looking at a 2 stroke, go with a newer Direct Injection. The Optimax, Yammi HPDI, or ETec. IMHO, the Opti 2 stroke, or Suzuki 4 stroke, 250-300 would be the way to go. If you have a stock, untouched transom, you might want to beef it up. Those are probably at the limit, weight wise, for the new original transom, and if your is tired, you might want to consider strengthing it before hanging new iron on it.

Thanks for the input on the engines. I ordered my paint yesterday from Tom. I look forward to applying this product. Will post before and after pics.
