225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC

Hi All,
I have a 1989 18 CC with a 25" transom, this model was offered with a 150 hp V6 from the factory, I have a good 225 V6 Evinrude that i am thinking of hanging on the boat, I know it will be tons of power,,,, does anyone know how much heavier the 225 V6 is than the 150 hp V6. Will the extra weight be to much?

Thanks,
Walter

Walter,

According to the NADA web site, a 225 seems to be about 75 pounds heavier.

Also, the boat was rated for up to 150 HP. That seems to be a lot of power and weight.

It will be interesting to read some of the other responses.

Peter

The 150 Johnson on my 18 weighs around 375. Maybe with a new transom and a 3" raised deck I would consider more weight. IMO the hull would handle 225hp with no problem. Insurance companies and the Coast Guard wouldn't have the same opinion though. Hermco installed a bracket on an 18 powered by a 175. I'd love to see some performance numbers on that and hear whether the owner thinks it could handle more weight and hp.

I would think a 25" transom would also be a must.

You could do it and just work around the weight and speed differences. There has been an 18SF in the Tampa area that had a 225 on it for a while. The only reason to do it is the cost savings tied to having a motor on hand to hang on the boat(which is how many of us make decisions to boat these days ).

I have a 1978 18 cc with new raised transom and alum bracket with large flotation chamber. New etec 150 which weighs 430 lbs. Cockpit drains fine but probably would not without the bracket. Don't know speed #s yet but it begins to get squirrely at wot. Boat US will probably insure at an agreed value.

Once when I was in the keys I saw a 20 on a trailer with twin 2.5 merc's on it. No kidding.
