pigment in epoxy
 

Anyone ever used pigment in their epoxy? I ordered some white and was getting ready to give it a shot. The epoxy is 3:1 from US Composites. The job is actually the inside of an ice chest. I already laid up one layer of 1708 and then 10oz cloth over the foam and want to turn it white. I am going to topcoat with pigmented white resin...any thoughts? Thanks

Not sure about the pigment.. Qiuck question, what kind of foam can you lay fiberglass over to do a chest. Thanks

Urethane Sheet Foam!
 

I am just quoting from my fiberglass supply catalog.

"Urethane Sheet Foam"

This is a nonstructural foam used for a coring when insulation is needed such as coolers and ice boxes.....

I made a small cooler with the white styro from Home Depot. Mas epoxy worked, poly resin got hot and melted the foam.

Its a closed cell poly foam. We tried a test and it seemed to work good. It laid up nicely and is strong (wont dent). More 1708 going on the bottom soon to support the cold plate (this is actually for a kitchen).

I am not sure about the resin, but I have a little divinysel left over that may be enough for your project. I insulated my fish box with it. I live in Chatham if you need some.

Thanks for the generous offer (if directed @ me). Of coarse I know where the 27’ is and she looks beautiful…drive by her all the time. The cooler project is already built and laid up. It is for a local restaurant and we wanted to tint the final couple of coats of epoxy to avoid painting it on the inside. Nobody wants paint chips in their ice :o. I will be giving the white pigment a shot this weekend. From what I have seen you don’t want to go too heavy on adding it as it seems it could change the cured properties of the epoxy. I was hoping someone could share an experience. My guess is I’ll be torn between trying to make it too white and maintaining a non brittle cure. :D
