Transom on a 23
 

I have a 1984 23' with a full transom and a bracket with a 300 Yam. The transom is now a bit "soft" A fiberglass guy wanted 9500 to replace it and I will not pay that. Any thoughts on drilling and injecting the epoxy from Rot Doctor and letting it harden? Should I also glass in some aluminum struts from the end of the bracket to the bottom of the Vee? (his suggestion) Anyone know a repair place on Long Island?

I'm sure you can find a better price than that if you shop around. Your not going to like this reply but my suggestion is to not do any of that stuff, and to just do the transom right. With that 300 yami that is no joke back there. I'm sure you have an aluminum backing plate on the inside part of the transom on the boat. If not prob should look into that. Good luck hope you find a better price. :)

Your kidding right? A 300 Yami and your going to fool around with glue for a soft transom, you know what kinda torque is twistng back there? That price is high, but get it done right and replace the transom.

300 HPDI right?? For a second there, I was thinking the 300 4 stroke :eek:. $9500 sounds high.

If u don't take care of the soft transom.It's a good bet u will end up at the least with a yami-anchor,and sink the boat.Edangering both u and your passengers

Forget I am in the fiberglass repair business, but are you out of your mind? But please don't even think of doing something like that half ass, it is not safe and a very bad idea. We do many transom replacement on 23's and the advantage price is $6000.00. That should be the ballpark for a professional quality repair with the removal and re installation of the motor. I normally don't reply or get involved in the repair discussion unless I am asked but this really concerned me, so don't get pissed at my frankness it just that I was concerned. I would seriously consider recoring the transom with a high density foam core if you can. Injecting epoxy will probably not work and waste a lot of cash. Bracing and struts will not get you anywhere if the core is gone. :D

Dbl, How soft IS your transom? Does it have cracks? If it has a bracket, why wasn't the transom done at that time? Have the stringers separated? What was the condition of the wood when you drilled out the holes for the bracket?

WOW! That's like putting bald tires on your car for driving in the rain...an accident waiting to happen.

I got a quote just last week from a local company with a good rep to replace a transom on my old 23' Tsunami (not mine anymore), including de-rigging the motor and raising the transom from 25" to 30", re-coring with composite. Written estimate was $4200 to $4500, including color matching the gelcoat.

That price does not include re-rigging the old motor as the new owner plans to repower with a Zuke 300 4S, so figure a savings of $750-$800 there.

$9500 is WAY too much.
