Recommendations for a re-power of a SF23 Inboard?

I was wondering whether anyone has ever re-powered a 23' Seacraft center console with a classic inboard set up of a shaft/prop. As of now we are looking to put in either a 225HP or a 260HP volvo diesel. I was curious if anyone has any experience/suggestions or recommendations for this re-power? Also, does anyone know what shaft sizes work best and whether or not a 1.25'' shaft is sufficient. Thanks for your time.

where are you located. Lots of boats have been repowered with documentation here in the archives

It sounds like you are trying a conversion? The shafts are 1.1/4" on the original CC IB's. There is some debate whether that is sufficient for a diesel conversion. Most people have gone with a Yamnar due to the reduced weight power ratio.

A yanmar 4cyl is currently rated at 260hp and really sips gas. Almost bulletproof, too. You may or may not need a tranny and trolling valve because at idle you will be going 5+kts. You are looking at 20-25k for sure unless you can find a running take out. Also there is a guy somewhere perhaps in texas that marinizes 5.9litre cummins and they are about 12k or so but don't quote me on that.

I think this is the information (5.9 liter Cummins-marinized) that was mentioned.

"H&H Distributing, a company in Angleton, Texas, manufactures a marine conversion kit for the 5.9, which includes a water-cooled exhaust manifold and turbo housing, heat exchanger, raw-water pump, marine bell housing, flywheel, and all necessary gaskets, brackets and fittings. Engines from 1994-97 Dodge trucks were 12 valve editions running 160 to 180 hp in trucks equipped with automatic transmissions and up to 215 hp for 1997 standard-transmission trucks."

Good luck!

Heard about you today. Just got my d4 from the same place today. Trying to wrap up this project. Give me a pm if you have any questions.

I was going to recommend a Volvo D-4, 225 HP. Perfect motor for that boat.

The 260 Yanmar is a lot of motor for a 23 Sea Craft. Thats what I have it in my Fortier (although I have the 4LH 230 HP actually)
