Transom rebuild thread
I have started to notice some weakness in the transom of my 18'. Does anyone recall the good transom repair threads? I seem to recall one where the outer skin was removed instead of getting into the inner liner. I am having a hard time finding them with the search function.

Re: Transom rebuild thread
I may be wrong, but I think Strick's rebuild of his 20' was an "outside-in." If not, I remember that there was so much discussion of glassing and loads, even if it wasn't an "outside-in", you should definitely read trough it for educational purposes. It is called "Here we go again."

Re: Transom rebuild thread
OldBluesPlayer and Fishjack did transoms from the outside. I'm in the process of doing one now and raising it 5". I can start a thread if you like.

Re: Transom rebuild thread
Please do, Tim. I'll be doing that soon as I repower - could be sooner than expected if gas keeps going up. What's the new project?

Re: Transom rebuild thread
That would be great. Everyone, thanks for the help.

Re: Transom rebuild thread
Don't know if mine is a good transom replacement thread or not, but I have a slide show of the outside in replacement project that I did on my 1976 20SF. Only problem is I set it up using Adobe's Photoshop Album 2.0 Starter Edition (read-free software) and it's a large file and I can't seem to upload it in to Photobucket, etc. Any work arounds to that, and I'll post it their.

Re: Transom rebuild thread
My 1978 18 got a new raised foam transom from the inside. I will attempt to post photos. http://i262.photobuck http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_sc3.jpg [image]The aft decks were removes as was the well.http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_sc3.jpg[/image] http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_sc4.jpg http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_sca.jpg http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...Seacraft-1.jpg [image]The foam is not as rigid as plywood so some additional structure inside was needed.http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_sc5.jpg[/image] http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_scb.jpg http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...uz/th_sc10.jpg http://s262.photobucket.com/albums/i...ruz/th_sc9.jpg et.com/albums/ii113/keyscruz/sc.jpg
The boat is now mostly back together. It has an etec 150 and it survived itsfirst outing into rough water with no signs of stress. |
Re: Transom rebuild thread
I would really like to close it in and add a bracket if I'm going to tear into it.. Do you have photos of the finished product?

Re: Transom rebuild thread
Here's a few shots from some of the work. It's not going to be a how to . . . deal, but you can at least see what I'm doing with the inside skin raising it up 5". It's ugly now . . . but the fairing will clean that right up. The bottom is back filled with a mix of 1/2" chopped strand and cabosil and enough just resin to wet it all out.
