1979 23' Seacraft

I am looking at purchasing a 1979 23' Seacraft Center Console. It seems to be in good condition. The one thing I noticed is on the port side deck somewhat near the back of the consol there was a spot that had a noticeable bounce to it when you stepped on it. The bounce spot was maybe 2 feet square. The rest of deck seemed solid bilge and anchor lockers seemed dry. Is this common in this model - what could I check on my own before hiring a surveyor. The seller stated the bounce never bothered him and he has a similar bounce in his newer boat. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's not normal. The deck should be solid..... however on a 29 year old boat there is bound to be a few soft spots. Hatches are a common area to find soft spots as well. If it's not too bad you may be able to live with it... otherwise use it as a bargaining chip on your sale price if you plan on fixing it. There are lots of good boats out there for sale right now.

Strick is dead on. The seller is blowing some smoke your way. Personally I would either hire a surveyor and/or use a moisture reader on both the deck and the transom.

If you want to see a copy of what a good boat survey on a SeaCraft looks like, let me know (and I will send you a copy).
