1978 20CC with 2002 225 optimax
 

Does anyone have any suggestions on this set-up? It does not seem to get out of the water smooth. It tends to plow through the water before getting on a plane. Tops out at 4800 rpm allowing a speed of 40 mph. I have a 19 pitch aluminum prop on it. I have tried several different props. Any suggestions will be tried. Thanks

thats odd. that engines needs to get 5800 rpm. you may need to raise engine. and for sure go down to a 17 pitch.

19 pitch doesn't sound wrong to me. Motor could be mounted too low, but that just sounds too far off. I'm guessing something wrong with the motor. Have you checked to see if it is firing on all cylinders?

You absolutely should be getting better top-end performance with that motor. As mentioned before, it could be too low. The sluggish start could be attributed to its weight on the transom, but once out of the hole, your top end should be at least 10 mph more.

I am getting 40.6 gps mph with a 115 OptiMax at 5400 rpm. I wonder if weight is the issue?

The issue isn't weight. The 225 hp will more than make up for the added weight. The issue is with the motor, I promise you.
