For what it is worth. Yesterday I got off the phone with 3-M. I had a tube of 5200 un-opened go bad. They told me a tube not opened has a shelf life of 12 months period. Open,it goes hard within 3-4 months. Nothing you can do will help. Use it up asap.

I have been told that keeping it in the freezer helps. I squeeze out a good amount of 5200 at the tip and wrap it with plastic film and stick it in the freezer. I do not know if it extends the life beyond the 3-4 months.

5200 is just as bad as PVC cement... :(
Use it once then you might as well toss it..

See ya, Ken

Most of the time I buy the tooth "paste tube" size. Put the cap back on and clean the nozzle with thinner. Probably cheaper in the long run.

I have placed mine in the freezer with plastic over the nozzle and it still is good. I just let it defrost in the sun and use then refreeze.

One thing that might justify throwing it out is. I found home depot sells a tube of 5200 for 12 bucks. I didnt beleive it at first I thought the tubes were smaller, but they are the same size and half the price from any marine store.

That's not the only thing that you can beat the marine dealers' prices on!!!

Re: 3M 5200

Be careful w/ stuff from Home Depot that costs half as much. True, BW and West Marine love to jack up prices, but i have had some terrible luck w/ many products ive bought at lowes or Home depot that i found to be cheaper than smaller specialty stores. I said luck before but after you buy three tubes of caulk that are faulty you have to wonder...
