Vents on the 23
 

Hey Gang,
Well I removed my vent boxes (or whatever they are called) to make way for the new transom. The boat will have a bracket and I have seen many guys close these in. SO... whats the deal? Epinions?? I can put the vent boxes back in. They were only held in by 2 screws and some putty. I can also leave them out (the boxes) and just install vents. OR I can glass 'em over like some of the others. Its winter here in the NE so I have time to think it over. Here are some pix of the vents and boxes. I'd be intrested to hear what others think. The transom core it out of the boat. Boat is a 23SF CC

If the boat is an outboard, I don't think you need the vents, and I would probably delete them. They where for bilge venting of the inboard/i-o boats.

I had the same boxes on my Tsunami.I re-used them as i have an I/O,and they are a Coast guard Requirement.

You don't need them on an outboard powered boat,but as Capt.Chuck stated,it's a good way to get some air into the damp areas,fresh air to help dry out the bilge never hurts,plus I personally think they look nice.

So with the boat no longer having the I/O's the vent blower can go....right?

Chuck, I am happy to put the boxes back in with the dryer tubes facing forward and aft if recomended. I didnt see anyone leave them (boxes) out but leave the vent in place. Funny you should say that about the decks....they are mint! :cool:
Wish I could say the same about the transom. I could put my finger through it.

I considered glassing over the vents when I re did my 23 but decided against it and saved myself some work. I took out the vent boxes and just installed the vents back into place. Someone once said that the forward vents were good for taking in water in rough seas but I found that in most conditions they ride high enough out of the water and forward of the waves so it was never a problem. Vent your boat :D
