motor selection
 

I'm trying to figure out what Yamaha 4-stroke motor application would be best for my 1978 23' CC a single 250hp or twin 150hp? I scuba dive so we pack alot of weight on the boat. Does anyone know the speeds and fuel consumption for each application? The motor will be on a bracket.

I have a 23 Savage with a single 225 on a backet with 4 divers and 8 tanks I still cruise at 28-30 and burn about 15gph. with less weight I burn about 11-12gph. My preference is always for single engines, their are arguments for both sides.

Definately some strong opinions here.

1 vs two engines

2 stroke vs 4 stroke

I run a two engine setup and love it. However, it cost more and it is a lot of weight back there. I just installed 4 blade rev 4 prop's to get more stern lift.

There is another poster (deuce?) who is running 4 stroke Yamaha 150's.

I have a F250 Yamaha on a 23' Sceptre (Endured) and twin F150's on a 23' Savage (Deuce). The single is almost 1 mpg better than the twins. Other than that, the "normal" performance numbers are almost the same. The "hole shot" and following sea performance of twins is better. Both boats have Armstrong brackets and 140 gal fuel tanks.

The single is my freshwater boat and the twins are my offshore application. When you are 60 miles offshore, there is "something" about having two engine back there. May just be a "head" thing.

No, you won't plane a 23' with a single engine equiped with twin 150HP motors :(

I agree with Capt Chuck. I do not believe it will plane with one 150.

If you carry 13p props (and don't mind getting wet) you could get it on a plane. If you have 21p props on 150's and you drop one motor . . . why press your luck. Beating the piss out of your motor by running WOT 3200rpm trying to get on a plane . . . . you risk detonating the second motor and destroying your last chance at getting home. Just slug it out at displacement speeds 7-8mph (can be done with a 8hp high-thrust kicker) or carry 2 party barge props.
