checklist

I am looking at a 74 23cc, has anyone ever posted some sort of checklist or problems to look for when evaluating an older boat? This particular boat has an outboard on the transom, no bracket. any thoughts on some of the major things to look out for ? Thanks, Brad

well I will be the first to say it. Unless the boat has been stored in a garage since the day it was new. ther will probably be rot somewhere in it. all kidding aside, I would either purchase a moisture meter for a hundreds bucks or see if you can barrow one and go over the boat real good. I would pay specail attention to the transom. tilt the motor up and kinda lay your body over the lower unit ans see if the transom moves. Check around the console and leaning post for soft spots on the floor. remember if you find a soft spot the size of a soft ball you usually end up cutting a 2'x 2' spot to get at the rot. Once the water penetrates the coring it spreads alot.

Soft spots and the transom will show up around places screws were put in - seats and the console itself

I looked at a 23 Sceptre for Island Trader and put together a spreadsheet that was sort of a check list. If you'll PM me with your e-mail address, I'll send it to you.
