Re: Sell engines as is or fix em and sell em?
You've got to do the numbers . . . as well as factor time into the decision making process. What's wrong with the one engine? What's the repair going to cost? how long will the repair take and what is the going rate for a set of those engines once they are repaired? I can't imagine that the set is worth more than $2000 - 2500/pair even with one engine rebuilt and probably $1000 - $1500 "as-is". Is the repair going to cost more than $1000? is so then sell "as-is".
My suggestion would be to try to maximize your profit by selling the good one separately asking $1000 - $1500, one for parts $350 - $500 (depending on what's wrong), and selling the rigging seperately for $100 - $200. Again this is just my opinion. Ebay and get them sold in 7 days. Craigslist is too much of a PIA. |
Re: Sell engines as is or fix em and sell em?
I think a replacement engine could be had for 1200-1400. So you could dump the bad one on ebay and replace it with a good one. There are a few shops popping up now that rebuild 2 strokes. I bet if the economy keeps heading in the same direction they will look like pretty smart guys.
What makes the most sense for the type of boating you do? If you don't run that often, the fuel savings on a new engine will take a long time to get to. How often are you offshore? There is also the smoke and thunder issue, but I say $1200 beats $12000 any day. We would all be running carb'd 2 strokes (ok fine maybe not premixed) if not for the EPA. |

If it has compression you can probably fix it but they aren't worth that much even fixed. Parts are just so expensive along with labor if your going to sell just sell what you have - LU is worth something for sure.

Re: Sell engines as is or fix em and sell em?
thanks for the info guys, i really love this site, very rarely do i find forums where i get such informative and quick responses. i am so proud to now be a part of the Classic Seacraft family. I have found a guy that is going to look over the engines for me and see what would be required (roughly) to get them both ready for the water (since the boat has been sitting for about 1 Yr) after he gives me some idea i will make a final decision. I am leaning toward getting rid of them pretty quickly and moving on. i want to close the transom and put on an armstrong bracket to get ready for the repower i hope to find soon. thanks again for the info and will post some pictures of my project in the pictures forum soon. Re: Sell engines as is or fix em and sell em?
luck,
Sounds good. How are you planning to use the boat? Is this your only sled? I have been searching around for my repower, and considering how many boat dealerships and manufacturers have gone under, there really aren't as many good deals as I would have expected. Prices seem to be holding, there is just a lot less turn over and purchases being made. I have heard of some sweetheart deals (like shrimp's boat! great price considering the skill level of the previous owner) because that is what it takes to make a sale, but otherwise it feels like a mexican (or Swedish or whatever) standoff. High prices = no sale. Ok good luck and be sure to post some pics soon. |
Re: Sell engines as is or fix em and sell em?
Ken,
This is my only ride...I hope to use it for offshore fishing occasionally, inshore fishing quite often and pleasure riding for the family a bit too..i have too small girls and need to make the ride as family friendly as possible without giving up the fishing advantages. I know what you mean about motors. One would think there are deals all over the place, however there is not much to be found. I have several large boat builders around me, i am trying to work a deal with them on a motor or two for boats that they are no longer building because it is so slow for them.... good luck with your search...pics will be up when i find time (if that ever happens) LL |
