Hi all,

anyone know of any great prices on a Volvo 5.0 or 5.7 I/O package?

Not sure if you're looking to do the install yourself or not...I know Cape Cod Marine in Dennis is a Volvo carrier...Give them a call and ask for Ron Menard...508-432-4241. They're putting in a 5.0 Merc for me now.

Steve,Doug Russell marine in Worcester MA. has Volvo and Merc packages.
Have heard both good and bad about them.I have never dealt with them, but, from what I've been told, they sell lot's of engines and drives.

Maybe They are worth checking out,and maybe someone else on the site can give you info on them.

John, That's where I got my 5.0 mercruiser and drive...I thought I got a decent deal...You need to stay on them and make sure everythings included but they did right by me.

Thanks guys

I've been on the phone with Doug Russell, actually spoke with him today. I know the guys at Cape Cod Marine, I live right down the road from them. Those 26's are pretty sweet boats! I'm looking to install myself with some help from a buddy who has more experience doing repowers. Looks like I'm going with a Volvo 5.0 GXi, 270 hp, fresh water cooled. I was on a friends Pursuit 25 with a FW cooled Merc last fall, and he had a heater hooked up from the hot water. Heat coming out of the cabin was nice! Now I'm trying to decide between single and duo prop.

blackfin26- what is the Merc 5.0 going in to?

Rock, It's going into a Hiliner 22 with a bravo 3...A bit of overkill but it should be a very effecient ride...I hope!

Re: Volvo I/O question

On the single versus duoprop question.....I repowered a heavy 24 WAC with the 5.7 FWC Merc and a Bravo 1. I definitely had the Bravo one over geared at 1.5:1 and was using a 15 pitch Rev 4....WOT about 41MPH at the WOT RPM of 5150 with a cruise of around 27mph getting 2.6-2.7mpg. I picked a Bravo 3 with 2.2:1 gearing and using a 22 pitch prop set I could hit 44mph at 4900RPM, cruise at 30mph and get 2.9mpg. Added benefit was better idle speed tracking (less bow steer) and a bit better planing speed (although I had a permatrim on the Bravo I and with the stern lifting Rev 4 it did pretty well at low speed planing). The difference in a "package" cost for getting a Bravo 3 vs a Bravo 1 was something like $40. Can only wish I'd gotten the Bravo 3 originally. The cost of props steered me away, but you can find prop on ebay much cheaper than new.

Bottom line, the duo prop should out perform the single in every category....mine certainly did with the merc.

Re: Volvo I/O question

One more note on the Merc FWC....it's known as "fully" FWC, ,meaning the exhaust manifold are FWC cooled. The seawater side if pretty much all bronze until it goes into the exhaust elbows. I expect much better longevity in the salt. Also think carefully about the cooling water path.
I kept the intake on the drive and aded a through hull. Not sure if it's an option on Volvo. My strainer is positioned a few inches above the water line so I can open it with the boat in the water. You'll also need to mount the coolant reservoir someplace.....

A FWC V8 should be a nice power plant on a 23 SC....

1bayouboy,

I don't understand- your intake strainer is above the water line?

I'm still on the fence about Volvo vs. Merc. I'm looking at all my options right now. That "fully FW cooled" setup sounds good. Is that the "Sea Core"?

Re: Volvo I/O question

Yes...there an intake grate on the through hull, but the hose goes to a Vetus strainer that is mounted under the transom a few inches above the waterline. So there are actually two intakes....one on the stern drive that comes through the transom assembly oand one from a through hull that goes to the Vetus strainer. The hose from the strainer and the hose from the sterndrive/transom assembly then meet at a Y pipe about 1 foot from the seawater pump. It's the way Merc does the Bravo Drives....
