Yamaha Diesel Outboards
 

I was looking over price sheets for Chinese-made RHIB and fiberglass boats, and I was sent this by one of them: Asian-market outboard engine prices if the engine is purchased with the boat.

• Yamaha ME270STIL 127hp 2-stroke diesel outboard USD$19,411 rigged.
• Yamaha ME370STIP1 165hp 2-stroke diesel outboard USD$25,535 rigged
• Yamaha ME422STIP2 245hp 2-stroke diesel outboard USD$31,764 rigged

These are the motor costs only and include single forward control and aluminum propeller. No other specs included. They also listed diesel sterndrives from 95 to 345 hp.

I had no idea Yamaha made a diesel outboard. I have not been able to confirm this through another source as yet.

I bet we're kept in the dark about most fuel saving devices. My neighbor's in the utilites business and has an old diesel 2 stoke 4 cylinder water pump for dewatering. he says it uses about 1/3 the fuel as a comparable gas 4 stroke.

I think yamaha uses toyota blocks for a lot of stuff (new 350 yami is supposed to be the lexus V8 block), so I can believe that a yanmar or made it into an outboard. That truck in the great clip of the indestructible hilux (tacoma) on top gear was an oil burner. Japan aggressively outlawed small block diesels in the late 1990s, so if they do exist, they would have to be non-JDM.

I was talking to the MEG guys and they said that diesel torque is a huge problem for lower units. Even at the lower HPs you still need a beefy lower unit which increases costs a lot.

Maybe in china 'outboard' means the motor is mounted above the waterline, and the drive shaft goes straight back... basically an inboard but the prop shaft goes straight back from above the transom. I have seen pics of this type of setup, and the forward only gear box makes sense.

The last time I went to Yamaha sales training (back in 2006 maybe?) they said the Yamaha 350 outboard that was in development at the time...was from an engine they developed for the Volvo XC-90?

I also heard that they developed/tuned an inline 4 cylinder for the Lexus entry level sports car.


They probably make motors for a lot of companies....

Whats a Yamaha "Enduro" 2 stroke? I thought an enduro was a dirt/street bike :D

Might could use triple or quad E-tec 55hp Multi Fuel outboards on a 23 ;) -
Military E-Tecs
