transom test

Whats a good way to check a transom for rot? The boat im looking at does not have a motor on it. Other than a rubber hammer, any ideas?

The best way is a moisture meter.
The next best is a rubber hammer and drill some small holes in suspect areas.
Usually the problems are where the holes go through, motor mounting holes, transom screws, etc.

I could tell when i was tearing out the old wiring, each screw that I took out of the transom, water started seaping out. I good sign to me that the thing was wet.
